One of the uses of the Present Perfect

Tense is to talk about events and actions that started in the past and continue up to the present.

E.g.:

I have studied English since last year.

She has worked at the store for four years.

We have lived here for more than ten years.

* In this case, two signal words are used: FOR and SINCE.

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

Common mistakes:

I love English! I study English for 2 years.

I love English! I have studied English for 2 years.

My brother has knew his friend since last year.

My brother has known his friend since last year.

This is how the Present Perfect

Tense is formed:

HAVE/HAS + PAST PARTICIPLE OF THE VERB

• The Past Participle of the regular verbs follows the same rules of the past form.

• The Past Participle of the irregular verbs doesn’t follow any rules, each one is different from the other.

FOR / SINCE

SINCE is used to define a point in time when the action started.

Bill has played soccer since he was 5.

FOR is used to describe a period of time defining the duration of the action.

They have known each other for 23 years.
