Course Title: Criminal Law and Procedure
Course Description: Fundamental concepts of criminal law and procedure from arrest to final
disposition including principles of federal and state law emphasizing the role of the paralegal in the
criminal justice system.

Student Learning Outcomes: After successful completion of this course, the students should be
able to:
1. Define and use terminology relating to criminal law and procedure.

2. Draft documents used in criminal law and procedure.

3. Apply the ethical considerations of the paralegal working in criminal law and procedure.

4. Distinguish criminal law in substance and process from civil proceedings.

are a group of foundational skills and workplace competencies that the Secretary’s Commission
on the Acquisition of Necessary Skills established as vitally important for workplace success in the
21st century. In Collin’s workforce programs, the SCANS skills are developed and reinforced
throughout the curriculum to provide students with an opportunity to hone these
skills/competencies in the context of their education. Over the course of an entire degree program,

presentation, and will take a midterm and final examination. Grade composition is as follows:
