Week of 8/19-23:
Homework due Friday, 8/23: I will explain the homework on Tuesday…Write a step-by-step procedure (minimum five
detailed steps) for testing the absorption of 3 brands of paper towels. You are given the problem and the
independent/dependent variables. Taking these into account, design a controlled experiment to help you determine which
paper towel absorbs the most water. Think of ALL the things you need to control to make sure they don't get in the way,
and how you are going to MEASURE how much each towel can absorb. This will take a lot of thought and planning. MUST
BE TYPED with proper paper heading. PLEASE print your procedure and turn in to the basket.
Quiz this Thursday on the Scientific Method
AZ Standards addressed this week: Strand 1, Concept 1-4

between qualitative and quantitative data.
Run the helicopter experiment based upon your lab groups procedure written last week. Collect data.
Hand out a study guide for Scientific Method quiz on Thursday and go over together.
Tuesday, 8/20:
Continue writing lab report from yesterday’s helicopter experiment. Discuss/share problems and results/conclusions of
each group's experiment.
Mini-lessons on making graphs, analyzing data and writing a conclusion.
Explain homework due Friday.
Wednesday, 8/21:
L to J quiz administered and recorded.
Review Steps of Scientific Method for quiz tomorrow.
Thursday, 8/22:
Intro to the metric system, and some practice measuring metric length. Each person measures their smile width.
Administer Sci. Method quiz.
Friday, 8/23:
Take smile measurements from yesterday, and create a class data chart. Each student creates a graph including all TAILS
to turn in. Discuss metric length measurements from yesterday, and general rule for converting cm to mm.
Define matter, mass. Lesson on mass and gram as the base unit to measure mass. Metric System – Important Facts page
handed out – hold onto this sheet ALL YEAR!
