Extra Credit Assignment (Optional): DUE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10th
Write a short essay that explains Social Disorganization/collective efficacy theory, using “Boyz
N the Hood,” to explain the central concepts. The essay should also draw from Sampson and
Wilson’s discussion of the intersection of race and social disorganization. In particular, discuss
the role of “cognitive landscapes” and the explanation for how African Americans end up
“trapped” in inner city neighborhoods.
The essay should be a maximum of two pages, double spaced. The essay will be scored on a
scale of 0-2 points. These points will be added to your assignment average at the end of the
semester. In essence, getting a score of “1” would be like adding one point to each one of your
assignments. Also note that a zero is possible—you will not get credit for a poorly done essay.
