In order to become a member of the APVMA you must fill out the membership application and pay your dues. Dues can be paid online or sent as checks to the address located on the membership page. The Payments for club dues have been separated in 5 different categories depending on the number of active members in your club. *An active member is defined as anyone who takes part and plays an active role in your club. http://apvma.org/onlinemembership-registration.html Remember you can always email the executive board members with any questions you may have!! The APVMA Executive Board will decide and reward however many applicants they see fit. The 2015 scholarships and awards will be announced at Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine this year. All of the scholarships and awards can be found at http://apvma.org/awards--scholarship-applications.html. A short description of some different scholarships and awards offered this year are as follows: Outstanding Club Community Service Award This award is given to one or more APVMA pre-veterinary clubs that promote interest in veterinary medicine. This award recognizes the outstanding work a preveterinary club has done the past year within their own community. This is a nonmonetary award and applicants must be a member of APVMA or part of an APVMA pre-veterinary club. Outstanding Senior Award This award is given to one senior that exhibits leadership, community service involvement and outstanding achievements over the course of his or her 4 years of college. This applicant must hold a senior status at his or her institution in order to apply for this award. This is a non-monetary award and applicants must be a member of APVMA or part of an APVMA pre-veterinary club. Outstanding Senior Award This award is given to any number of qualified applicants in the amount of $500. These applicants will be awarded based on a demonstration of involvement within the community, how they stimulate interest in veterinary medicine and activities within their pre-veterinary club. This is a monetary award and applicants must be a member of APVMA or part of an APVMA pre-veterinary club. New Scholarship Offered this Year: ISIS Belize Scholarship This award will be given to two qualifying applicants in each period (winter and spring). These two scholarships have a value of 50% of the regular cost of a single course or full program (two courses) with a scholarship value of approximately $2,500. These two applicants will be chosen based on their hard work and dedication to veterinary medicine. Dates: March 27-29 Location: The Ohio State University of Veterinary Medicine Please direct questions to this page or email ohiostate.apvma@gmail.com. The official website will be coming to you very soon. What is the National Symposium? The APVMA Symposium is an annual two-day event that brings together prospective veterinary students from all over the country for an opportunity to learn more about the field of veterinary medicine. Participants are able to gain experience through lectures and hands-on labs, as well as learn about the veterinary school application process and talk to representatives from different Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. Students can run for APVMA executive positions such as: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and webmaster. Check out a couple of our opportunities below! Run for a Position on the APVMA Executive Board Serving on the APVMA Executive Board is a prestigious leadership opportunity and a great way to get involved with the APVMA! Executive officers serve a 1-year term that lasts from national symposium to the following year’s symposium,and the team consists of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Webmaster. Responsibilities of the different executive officers can be found in the constitution here, and you are welcome to email the current executive officers with questions about their respective positions! Election Process: APVMA member must be nominated by another individual at the President’s Meeting during the National APVMA Symposium After nominations, the candidate must prepare a brief statement about him/herself and what the candidate would contribute to the organization (including a photo is optional) Elections will take place on Saturday evening during the final banquet dinner, where candidates will have the opportunity to give a short speech (no more than 5 minutes long) before APVMA members vote If elected, new executive board members will attend a mandatory meeting following the banquet dinner conclusion Serving on the APVMA Executive Board is truly a great experience, and we hope that you will consider this wonderful opportunity! Requirements to submit a bid to host: - Club must be in good standing with the APVMA - Club must be nominated at the President’s Meeting during the National APVMA Symposium - After nominations, the candidate must submit a brief statement outlining what the club has to offer as a host for the National APVMA Symposium (1-2 paragraphs) - Elections will take place on Saturday evening of the symposium during the final banquet dinner, where candidates will have the opportunity to give a short presentation (5-7 minutes) about what the club has to offer as a host Things we would like to see in the presentation: - Evidence of strong support from the club and advisor(s) - Evidence of administrative support from a representative of the host institution - Conference resources for lectures and labs, housing abilities (hotels or other), and benefits to APVMA members to attend the National APVMA Symposium at that host institution Benefits of Hosting the APVMA Symposium: - Showcase your veterinary school or university - Great leadership opportunity within the APVMA - Network with other veterinary schools and industry representatives, as well as faculty and clinicians from your host school - Recruitment opportunity for the CVM - Generate revenue for your club Please feel free to email APVMA President Kim Strait at apvmapresident@gmail.com if you have any questions!
