What is a Fluid?
S A fluid is anything that has no
fixed shape and can flow. Usually
it is a liquid or a gas.

S Each group will be assigned a type of fluid. Your job is to
come up with as many examples as you can in two minutes.

S Syncrude originally used conveyer
belts to move the oils sand from the
mine to the processing plant, but found
it was way to expensive. It is now
pumped to the plant by way of a slurry
pipeline.

fluids.

the filter, Mr. Jameson asked Ashley to bring him
four liters of oil from the shelf. She went to the
shelf but saw some cans labeled 5W-30 and some
10W-30. She hollered back to her dad and asked
what she should bring?

• Alberta Oil Sands: only 25% can be
extracted by conventional methods, but
75% can be extracted by lowering the
viscosity of the oil in the ground, before
trying to extract it.
• Fluids move across the country in
pipelines. Heaters are used to control the
viscosity along the pipelines

Cleaning products can have their viscosity
adjusted by changing the temperature…to
remove bubble gum from shoe or carpet
lower the temperature.
Use an ice cube to make the bubble gum
more viscous, making it easier to remove.
