EduSport Affecting 1200 young people in 7 primary schools
EduSport is a new primary school initiative that gets children ‘Playing for Success’.
The program, which has been running successfully for three months, aims “To
make learning through sport a fun and exciting way of creating new
opportunities for the future”. We can now say that we are well on the way to
achieving that goal.
The EduSport program was designed
by a Physical Education graduate
while also utilizing the experience of
coaches from the local area and
further afield. EduSport places a
strong
emphasis
on
creativity,
independent learning, thinking skills
and problem solving. EduSport sees
coaches deliver two 45 minute
coaching activities in participating
schools during curriculum time each week.
EduSport was created to help the children in the primary schools meet guidelines
set the world over. The International Guidelines for Physical Activity state that
EVERY child should take part in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.
2 hours should be provided during curriculum time tables and a further 3 hours
per week should be provided through extra-curricular activities.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) state that “All children and youth should
be physically active daily as part of play, games, sports, transportation,
recreation, physical education, or planned exercise, in the context of family,
school, and community activities”.
The Program
During P.E lessons there is a focus on giving the children the widest range of
experiences possible through enjoyable activities, therefore ensuring maximum

participation. Generally, extra-curricular activities may be less structured, whilst
still developing individual skills within a certain sport.
The program moves away from using individual sports such as football (soccer),
Cricket, Netball, and Hockey and tries to focus on the movements used in all of
these sports to turn them into games. This allows the children to improve their
level of motor skills, special awareness and helps them to understand how their
bodies work.
The program has been designed in an age
appropriate way. This means that the
youngest children get a simpler version and
different types of games that do not
resemble the sport as such. The older the
children the more structured the program
becomes and the sports are more easily
identified in the form of invasion games,
strike and field games, net and wall games,
and track and field games. Also as the
children get older the level of information that is being passed on to them is more
advanced. For instance, children in Grade 5 and above are taught the
common, and some of the scientific names, for the muscles.
EduSport is not just focused on sport, it also has a focus on cross curricula links.
Coaches look for opportunities to link parts of the session with other parts of the
curriculum such as maths, science, geography, social studies, etc. They try and
do this as much as possible because not every child learns in the same way.
There are visual (to see), auditory (to hear), and kinaesthetic (to do) learners.
Each child will be more weighted towards one type of learning, and it is
therefore important to meet the needs of all children whatever their learning
style.
School Feedback
Once the first term had finished the head coaches and managing director of
Breds organised a meeting with representatives of the schools in which EduSport
is involved. The reason for calling this meeting was to get feedback from the
schools on the impact of the program thus far.
The feedback was very positive, they told us that the children loved having the
coaches in the school and that they could not wait for the days that EduSport
came to teach. Another important point was that the attendance of pupils
increased on these days. One of the schools said that the children were
becoming more attentive in class since the EduSport program began and also
noted that the student relationships (peer to peer) had improved as classmates
had become more connected with each other. The schools agreed that there
had been a notable increase in self confidence in the children. In fact the only
negative point that the schools raised was, “We want you in school more”.

EduSport Coaches are a lot more than ‘just coaches’ they set their own high
standards. Coaches are charged with being good role models to the children
who are in the schools and within the surrounding communities.
Many children come from fatherless families and the males in their life often have
a negative impact upon their view on life. The EduSport coaches make it clear to
the children that they are there for them, that they can confide in them and that
they will give advice where possible.
EduSport coaches report that they have seen an unbelievable change in young
people’s attitudes since they have been in these schools and believe they are
making a positive difference to their lives.
EduSport Sidelines
Whilst the EduSport program works in schools on general physical activities, it also
has an element of specific sporting structure. The EduSport coaches are always
on the lookout for sporting talent during their sessions. When the coaches identify
talent they would then look to invite the students to join the academy, at The
Treasure Beach Sports Park, with which EduSport is affiliated. This allows the
children to improve their specific skills in Football, Cricket, Tennis, Basketball and
Netball. EduSport will provide a camp, at The Treasure Beach Sports Park for all
those involved with the academy. The camp will last 5 weeks and focus on U13,
U15 and U17 football. The camp will allow the EduSport coaches to have an
intense few weeks of development with the children, teaching them the ins and
outs of football from classroom to the field, through physical, nutritional and
psychological training.
The academy structure will allow the EduSport coaches to develop the talent on
offer and improve the level of sports performance in this part of Jamaica. The
academy and ‘football for all’ is currently running on Saturday mornings, where
from 10am till 1pm the children are provided with high quality coaching, food
and drinks. EduSport and Breds have a close relationship with the Jonathon
Hibbert Foundation that looks for talented footballers in St Elizabeth and links
them with scholarship opportunities for Universities in America. The development
of football talent though EduSport will give the students a better opportunity to
be awarded one of those scholarships.

The Treasure Beach Sports Park is a brand new sports facility in the heart of
Treasure Beach. The sports park is on its way to becoming a world class facility for
both the community and sports teams from abroad to use. The Treasure Beach
Sports Park has 17 Acers at its disposal, when completely finished it will boast 4
Football fields, 3 Cricket strips, 4 Tennis courts, 2 Basketball and Netball courts, a
Cricket Practice area, Children’s Play area, a Community Centre/Pavilion, and a
Bar and Grill.
The Treasure Beach Sports Park will invite teams from around the world to use the
facility as a tour venue by creating tournaments through The Breds Foundation as
a means of sustainability. The tournaments will involve teams from the academy
and the local area, which is why it is important for EduSport to develop talent so
as to provide touring teams with competitive games. We already have two
tournaments scheduled this summer involving U17, U15 and U13 Football teams.
Continuing the program
Based on the feedback given by the schools this program means too much for us
to discontinue it. The schools found that the program not only benefitted the
children as their attendance increased, but it also improved their behavior, their
attentiveness, and their ability to get along with their peers. The teachers also
benefitted because when the EduSport activities were in session it gave the
teachers a break, allowing them to mark children’s work and to plan for future
lessons. One teacher said “having the coaches here brought back my love for
teaching, and you can see that it has rubbed off on the children.” This goes far
beyond what EduSport was initially expecting.
Also because of the links with possible scholarships in the US it would benefit St
Elizabeth and Jamaica for the EduSport program to continue. The more
educated the population becomes the closer we can get to ‘Vision 2030’
becoming a reality. EduSport has already been demonstrated to improve
attendance and behaviour in schools, which can only lead to a better
education for the children involved. These improvements and increased
opportunities for scholarships will give these children a chance of further
education where previously it was near impossible. As the children get given
these chances for development we know they will have higher aspirations for
themselves, which in turn will forge a path to move St Elizabeth and Jamaica
forward.
