KIRFs (key instant recall facts) A support booklet for use at home Sutton in Craven C of E Primary School This booklet shows you what we will be looking at, term by term, and shows you some of the ways in which you can help at home. The booklet is also available on our school website www.sutton-in-cravencofe.n-yorks.sch.uk The ultimate aim is for your child to be able to recall their KIRFs instantly! Building confidence in mathematics is crucial so be pleased with their efforts and always encourage with praise. Make sure these practice sessions are enjoyable - if your child is really not in the mood it is the wrong time to be practising! Maths language Add, total, altogether How many to make? More than, less than Forwards, backwards, up from, back from Share, half, double Lots of, groups of After each practice session, or once a week, you could do a timed activity, how many questions can you answer correctly in two minutes? How well are you doing? Can you beat your own record? Autumn Term 1 I must be able to… I should be able to… I could be able to… say the number names in order to 20 write the number names to 20 read the number names to 20 Songs and rhymes e.g. 5 speckled frogs, 10 in a bed, 10 green bottles Everyday counting e.g. how many stairs, how many buttons, how many cars etc. Recognition e.g. what numbers can you read on the remote control/ oven/ clock/ number plates etc. Writing e.g. make and play your own bingo game, write numbers on the shopping list, write how many times things you ate today etc. Autumn Term 2 I must be able to… I should be able to… I could be able to… say all number bonds to 5 say all number bonds to 20 say all number bonds to 10 Five teddies are sitting on a shelf, 1 fell off, how many are left? All number bonds to 10 0 + 10 = 10 1 + 9 = 10 2 + 8 = 10 3 + 7 = 10 4 + 6 = 10 5 + 5 = 10 6 + 4 = 10 7 + 3 = 10 8 + 2 = 10 9 + 1 = 10 10 + 0 = 10 I have 7p in my purse. Summer Term 1 I must be able to… I should be able to… count forwards in 5s I could be able to… count backwards in count forwards 5s and backwards in 5s from any given number There are seven 5p coins in my purse. How much is there all together? 35p! How do you know? Because seven fives are 35. Call out Use a puppet or favourite teddy to count up in 5s, making a mistake. Can the child spot the mistake and explain what is wrong - then count along correctly with you. Use this to count forwards and backwards in 10s. Songs and rhymes There are lots of CDs available with musical tables. Great fun to sing along to on long car journeys!
