2013 Harper community survey: How others see us
Open to: All Full Time and Adjunct Faculty
Content: Every 3 years Harper conducts a survey of the residents of its district to learn about how our constituents
view the extent to which we meet their needs and to learn about unmet needs we need to consider. This year the
survey included in addition to district residents employers in the district. Come find out how others see us!

Administrator and faculty search process workshop – Registration Required
Open to: Any Faculty or Administrator who is planning on serving on a search committee. This workshop is required
only for individuals who have not participated in this workshop during the past two years.
Content: This session provides an overview of Harper’s hiring process with its associated guidelines for an effective
search. Topics include search committee responsibilities, legal considerations for the search and strategies for the

Advanced Features in Blackboard - Registration Required

Content: This session will focus on ways in which adjunct faculty can use Blackboard in creative ways to enhance
communication with their students, promote communication between students and stimulate student
engagement in their class. This workshop is designed for students who have mastered the basic uses of

Blackboard drop-in
Open to: All Full Time and Adjunct Faculty and Staff
Content: This drop-in session will provide the experienced user (using Blackboard for a semester or
longer) with assistance to make edits, implement a new Blackboard tool, or clean up a
course/GradeCenter that has been used for multiple semesters without a lot of maintenance between
offerings. A member of CII will be available to answer questions, provide suggestions, and demonstrate
the best practices of maintaining a Blackboard site. This session is NOT for those that are interested in
an introduction to Blackboard.

Camtasia Relay

Content: Camtasia relay is an easy-to-use lecture capture tool, which allows you to capture your
computer screen, audio and web camera video with the click of a button. These recordings upload
directly to the password-protected Harper College itunesu network where your students will be able to
access your materials.
Learn the nuts & bolts to using Camtasia Relay, along with the best practices for creating online video
resources for students.

The community college ethics bowl initiative
Open to: All Full Time and Adjunct Faculty
Content: Ethics Bowl is an exciting and fun competitive tournament with a valuable educational experience. In
competitions, students must not only understand the facts of and the social, political or ethical principles involved
in the case, but most also provide an effective argument on how to resolve the case. Participation in Ethics Bowl
develops skills necessary to both academic and career success. The session will discuss how to involve students in
Ethics Bowl both as an extracurricular and classroom activity. The session will be facilitated by coaches of Ethics
Bowl who are also members of the expansion committee.

Course design for student success using formative assessments and Blackboard adaptive release
Open to: All Full Time and Adjunct Faculty
Content: Learn how Blackboard Adaptive Release and formative assessments may be used to help students
validate their own learning prior to completing graded assessments. Includes demonstrations of Blackboard
Learning Modules and Adaptive Release with hands-on activities, and a discussion of successful options for
formative assessments.

DREAM - Diverse Relationships Engaged in Affirming Multiculturalism - Meet and Greet

Content: All faculty and staff are invited to attend this “meet and greet” as we get to know our new and seasoned
diverse colleagues in an informal, fun setting.
ESL student voices: Experiences in general education classes
Open to: All Full Time and Adjunct Faculty and Staff
Content: A diverse panel of current and former English as a Second Language students discuss their experiences in
non-ESL Harper College classes. What helps them succeed? What unique challenges do they face? What do they
want faculty members and others to know about their experiences?

Mentoring and Engaging Adjunct Faculty

Content: This session will focus on ways in which program chairs and coordinators can effectively mentor and
engage adjunct faculty. Participants will 1) hear from 2-3 current program coordinators who have developed and
implemented a mentoring program for adjuncts, and 2) learn how administrators in CAFÉ support and evaluate
adjunct faculty.

Mobile Devices
Open to: All Full Time and Adjunct Faculty
Content: With the advent of new student computing tools, such as smart phones and tablets, what can one person
do to anticipate how students make use of their course materials on these devices? The good news is there are
resources available for Harper faculty to adapt their materials for mobile devices. This one hour workshop will
acquaint faculty and educational support staff to software for developing mobile accessible course materials.

Working with students on the autism spectrum – Breaking down the communication barrier in the
classroom

Content: This session will provide tips and strategies, along with case studies, for all faculty and college
personnel to effectively work with students with Asperger Syndrome/Autism Spectrum.

Writing and using paper prompts to get better student writing
Open to: All Full Time and Adjunct Faculty and Staff, especially appropriate for faculty members who intend
to take part in this fall’s Writing Across the Curriculum Project
Content: This session focuses on how to use writing prompts in order to elicit better student writing. It
will discuss the common failings of writing prompts and how to address these problems in a way that
helps students understand the assignments. The session also covers aspects of presentation (i.e. visual
rhetoric and technical layout) and language use.
