In the 1920s many African American
artists moved to Harlem, New York.
They used writing, music, and painting
to share their ideas and feelings. This
period became known as the Harlem
Renaissance.
Writers and artists used their work to
call for an end to discrimination and
unfair treatment of African Americans.
The 1920s was also a time when sports
became more popular than ever.
Sports fans listened to baseball and
other sports on the radio. Athletes
such as Babe Ruth became as well
known as movie stars.
Radio and newspapers quickly spread
the news of heroic accomplishments
such as Charles Lindbergh. He became
the first person to fly alone across the
Atlantic Ocean. In May of 1927 he set
off from New York in his plane, The
Spirit of St. Lewis, to Paris, France. The
trip lasted 33 ½ hours.
Amelia Earhart later became the first
women to fly across the Atlantic
Ocean. Life for many women were
changed greatly after they got the right
to vote in 1920. The booming
economy and changing culture opened
up many new job opportunities.
