News • SAN FRANCISCO — A proposal to ban the circumcision of male children in San Francisco has been cleared to appear on the November ballot, setting the stage for the nation’s first public vote on what has long been considered a private family matter. • But even in a city with a long-held reputation for pushing boundaries, the measure is drawing heavy fire. Opponents are lining up against it, saying a ban on a religious rite considered sacred by Jews and Muslims is a blatant violation of constitutional rights. • Elections officials confirmed Wednesday the initiative had qualified for the ballot with more than 7,700 valid signatures from city residents. Initiatives must have at least 7,168 names to qualify. If the measure passes, circumcision would be prohibited among males under the age of 18. The practice would become a misdemeanor offense punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or up to one year in jail. There would be no religious exemptions. • The proposed ban appears to be the first in the country to make it this far. They stopped short, their faces downcast; 18 and one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only person staying in Yerushalayim that doesn't know the things that have been going on there the last few days?" Luke 24 13-31 • 19 "What things?" he asked them. They said to him, "The things about Yeshua from Natzeret. He was a prophet and proved it by the things he did and said before God and all the people. 20 Our head cohanim and our leaders handed him over, so that he could be sentenced to death and executed on a stake as a criminal. Luke 24 13-31 • 21 And we had hoped that he would be the one to liberate Isra'el! Besides all that, today is the third day since these things happened; 22 and this morning, some of the women astounded us. They were at the tomb early 23 and couldn't find his body, so they came back; but they also reported that they had seen a vision of angels who say he's alive! Luke 24 13-31 • 24 Some of our friends went to the tomb and found it exactly as the women had said, but they didn't see him." 25 He said to them, "Foolish people! So unwilling to put your trust in everything the prophets spoke! Luke 24 13-31 • 28 They approached the village where they were going. He made as if he were going on farther; 29 but they held him back, saying, "Stay with us, for it's almost evening, and it's getting dark." So he went in to stay with them. Luke 24 13-31 • 30 As he was reclining with them at the table, he took the matzah, made the b'rakhah, broke it and handed it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. "What was that for?" "That was for Pearl Harbor," the Jewish man says. "But I'm Chinese!" "Chinese, Japanese, what's the difference?" And the Jewish man sits back down. Then, the Chinese man walks up to the Jewish man and punches him in the face. "Ouch!" the Jewish man says. "What was that for?" "That was for the Titanic," the Chinese man says. "But that was an iceberg!" Today’s Joke • "Ice berg, Goldberg, what's the difference?" Demonology • Today we’re going to quickly tie up the last two teachings and then we’ll see what the ancient Rabbis have to say concerning demons. Demonology • • After that we’ll look at the story of Saul and the witch of Endor. Next week we’ll find out how to pray and strategize against evil spirits. Demonology • The first thing we covered in this series was that the passage that speaks of 1/3rd of the “stars” falling in Revelation 12:4… Demonology • • didn’t have anything to do with angels following after Lucifer when he fell. (you can download the previous teachings at www.aveinu.com) Demonology • Every time we see “stars” mentioned in Scripture other then when it’s actually talking about stars, it’s talking about people… Demonology • We looked at the story of Joseph and his brothers, represented as stars, bowing to him as one of many examples. Demonology • In the last two teachings we also discovered there are millions upon millions of demons in existence. Demonology • Rabbi Abba Benyamin said, "If the eye could see them, they’d go mad. They surround one on all sides. They are more numerous than humans.” Demonology • • Rabbi Yochanon (John the Beloved) writes in Revelation 9:16 that two hundred million demons are released out of the Abyss. That’s a lot of demons! Demonology • We’ve also learned that the word “angel” means messenger in both Greek and Hebrew and can mean a spirit messenger or a human messenger depending on it’s context. Demonology • There’s times the translators get that wrong and they translate as if the story is about a spirit being, when in fact it was a human being. Demonology • • Then we focused on different kinds of demons mentioned in the O.T. Strange or foreign gods (זרים, zeriym) gods brought by strangers Demonology • Disgusting Ones /abominations (תועבת, toe‘eebat) used to refer generally to the practices connected to Baal worship. Demonology • • This would also include the worship of Ishtar (the wife of Baal) the sex goddess. These are demons of homosexuality, adultery and immorality. Demonology • • The Devastators ( לשּׁדיםleshediym) These are spirits of murder ie abortion etc. gods (אלהים, elohiym) This can mean demons or it can mean G-d Demonology • New Ones (חדשים, chadashim,) gods/demons the Children of Israel had not been introduced to before. Demonology • • Strange gods were ones brought by strangers but were gods they knew of. Chadashim were gods they’d never heard of before. Demonology • We looked at various passages where these names were used to describe various classes of demons and that led us into the next teaching where we found some passages in Scripture that actually named a couple individual demons like Legion and Gog. Demonology • • We found that the man possessed by Legion had 6 thousand evil spirits in him. And we found that Gog was a Chief Prince which means “Arch Angel”. Demonology • The term Chief Prince is used only one other time in Scripture and that’s when describing Michael the Arch Angel in Daniel. Demonology • • Gog is also the chief of the Leshidim (The Devastators) he’s in charge of the demons of murder. We learned that all these evil spirits have various ranks. Demonology • • Starting with messengers (demons who basically report all that we say and do) Then there are Arch demons, those who have more power then the messenger demons and who can even prevent good angels from delivering messages like in the story of Daniel. Demonology • Then there are 6 winged Seraphim who have more power then the previous 2 categories and above them are finally the Cherubim, the most powerful of all of G-d’s creations. The hierarchy Cherubim I Seraphim I Messengers Demonology • • We also saw that Abaddon isn’t a demon at all but is called the “King” of the demons… “They had as King over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is "Abaddon" “ Rev 9:11 Demonology • • Only Satan allows himself to be called king. That name is only reserved for him in his realm. We also talked about how the Cherubim and Seraphim that fell with Satan were very powerful and could even crush planets. Demonology • We learned that there was a war in the heavens and planets, moons even entire star systems were destroyed in the battles before we even get to Genesis chapter 1 Demonology • • Gen 1 says The earth BECAME without FORM, and VOID in Hebrew. NOT that G-d created it that way. In fact we read in Isaiah… Demonology • Isaiah 45:18 clearly says “For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens, who is God, who formed the earth and made it, who has established it, who did not create it without FORM, who formed it to be inhabited: ‘I am the LORD, and there is no other.’” Demonology • G-d originally created the world perfectly, then Satan fell, there were wars in the heavens and those demons who were so powerful that they could crush planets, were locked up in the Abyss and also in the Euphrates river. Demonology • • REV 9 13 The sixth angel sounded his shofar, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the gold altar before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel, the one with the shofar, "Release the four angels (messengers, in this case evil spirits) that are bound at the great river Euphrates!" 15 And they were released. These four angels had been kept ready for this moment, for this day and month and year, to kill a third of mankind; Demonology • • As I mentioned before, these are probably Cherubim. We saw a progression in Rev 9 from the least powerful demons to the Seraphim to the Cherubim. Demonology • • That’s basically what we’ve covered up until now. So now we’re going to look at what the ancient Rabbis had to say about evil spirits. Demonology • • Before we go into this it has to be understood that everything we’ve covered so far is Biblical. The evidence is very strong but now we’re going into areas that don’t have much as Biblical backing. Demonology • • • Then why should we study it? “If it’s not in the Bible, then I don’t believe it!” My reply: Then you don’t believe in mathematics, plastic or the automobile. Demonology • • • We study it because some of it may be true. Some of it isn’t true for sure and I’ll be pointing those instances out. But it’s all worth knowing. Demonology • There were G-dly ancient Rabbis who had some thoughts on this topic of demons and those Rabbis may have had access to information we no longer have (ie. lost books). Demonology • • I’d rather hear what they have to say then any of these so called “deliverance ministries” who are 99% frauds. I don’t believe the Devil is behind every bush and under every rock… Demonology • I do believe millions of demons exist but what they can do and what power they have at this point in time is limited. Demonology • • • Do I believe that people have seen in this age demons or angles? Yep but I have a litmus test for that. If someone comes up to me full of pride and tells me how they saw an angel… Demonology • Right away I don’t believe them. If they truly had seen an angel, their humility would forever be in check. Demonology • They’d fall in fear and trembling at the feet of these Holy Messengers of G-d and not even the most holy of persons would remember at that moment if they were supposed to worship them or not! Demonology • • Time and time again, we see heavenly spirit beings tell the holy person they’re visiting, “Get up, do not worship me!” If you’ve seen an angel, pride will never be an issue with you again. Demonology • Furthermore if that person has idols in their homes like Dagon trees and Ishtar eggs, my guess is that the Angel would first visit the folks down the street who keep His Holy Feasts and appointed times. Demonology • Now, on to the ancient Rabbis. Demonology • • • The first thing we have to do is divide up two different camps. The Babylonian Jews and the Jews of Ha Aretz. Why do we have to do that? Demonology • Because the Jews of Babylonia were more prone to superstition due to more influence from the Pagans who ruled the nation they were subject to and the influence of their Pagan neighbors. Demonology • • There wasn’t as much superstition in Israel as in Babylonia. This is clearly seen by comparing the Jerusalem Talmud and the Babylonian Talmud and other writings from the two nations. Demonology • Once we’ve done that, we can then start to divide at least some fact from fable. Demonology • • When we see Judaic writings from both Babylonia and Israel agreeing, it increases the validity of the claim. (doesn’t mean it’s always right, it just increases the validity) Demonology • • Also, we’re focusing on the ancient Rabbis as opposed to Rabbis of medieval times. In medieval times, fables ran rampant and unfortunately affected even the Jewish communities. Demonology • • One thing we know for sure, the Jews of both Babylonia and Israel were aware of the presence of demons. As we learned last week, there’s millions of these evil spirits and the Jews believed that the oppression from them was very great. Demonology • • They felt the presence was so strong that it would at times make them feel weak. Specifically mentioned is a fatigue in the knees. Demonology • • Attempting to engage evil spirits would sometimes end in injury. R. Bibi ben. Abaye was hurt after he said he saw a demon but the Rabbis prayed for him and then he was ok. Demonology • • What the injury was is not recorded but other injuries recorded were injuries that had occurred or entered through the mouth. These mouth injuries are injuries occurred when trying to encounter evil spirits. (According to various ancient Rabbis) Demonology • While evil spirits are liable to be met anywhere, there are certain places which they particularly frequent. Demonology 1. 2. 3. 4. Dark places Unclean places Dangerous places Water Demonology • • • A favorite haunt is said to be ruined buildings. The idea of haunted houses goes way back. The Rabbis didn’t believe in ghosts, but they did believe in demons. Demonology • • Concerning ruined buildings, a Rabbinic discussion was held… “For three reasons one should not enter ruins: on account of suspicion, of falling fabric, and evil spirits.” By suspicion it is meant for immoral purposes. Like an unmarried couple going there to have relations. Also for two men or two women going there to have homosexual relations. Demonology • • For those reasons only, a place like that could attract evil spirits so I give validity to that belief. There probably were evil spirits in some of the ruins of that time. Demonology • • • There is a restaurant in Oroville called the Peerless. It used to be a brothel. They still have the stalls downstairs where the women would take the men to. Demonology • • Every time I go there, I get the creeps. I believe there are spirits still hanging around there. Demonology • • • There’s been murders there, you can see bullet holes in some of the supporting beams of the building. I believe there are demons that still hang out there. I believe that can happen, just like the ancient Rabbis believed. Demonology • • • Places that were unclean was another area where demons could be found. Particularly latrines. They didn’t have indoor plumbing so they all went to a certain area where they did their business. Demonology • • The Rabbis instructed people to not linger there. Do I believe that’s a place where demons would hang out? Demonology • • • Yes! Evil spirits love filth. We talked about this last week… demons are dirty and those who worship demons begin to emulate them. Demonology • • • I mentioned last week that there are devout Hindus who drink urine straight from the bull and drink water with the rats. Love demons? You’ll become like one! Demonology • • Another place where demons frequented was water. There are stories where evil spirits appeared to various Rabbis near open wells and rivers. Demonology • John the Beloved also believed that there were demons in the water, specifically in the Euphrates River. Demonology • • He wasn’t the only Rabbi to believe in this concept. There are various accounts of Rabbis having seen demons near water. Demonology • • This of course led to many superstitions such as pouring out a little water before you take a drink. Or pouring out any water in a home where someone died. Demonology • • • Should this mean to us today that water is evil? No. There are demons in the air too, that doesn’t make the air evil. What about other demons mentioned in Rabbinic literature? Demonology • • What about “Lilith” (queen of the demons)? What about the Satyr? (supposedly a demon that looks like half man and half goat) Demonology • • What about the Night Demons the Bible supposedly talks about? These are all words (Lilith, Satyr, and night demons) used to translate a passage in Isaiah. Demonology • • Is 34:14 14And the beasts of the waste places will come together with the jackals, and the evil spirits will be crying to one another, even the night-spirit will come and make her restingplace there. (Bible in Basic English Translation) Demonology • • • American Standard Version Is 34:14 And the wild beasts of the desert shall meet with the wolves, and the wild goat shall cry to his fellow; yea, the night-monster shall settle there, and shall find her a place of rest. Demonology • King James Version The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest. Demonology • Darby Bible Translation And there shall the beasts of the desert meet with the jackals, and the wild goat shall cry to his fellow; the Lilith also shall settle there, and find for herself a place of rest. Demonology • • Translating these passages this way leads to misunderstanding. And these aren’t just problems with translating it into English, it’s the same problem with other languages as well. Demonology • • But in Hebrew it’s much more clear. In Hebrew satyr is sa’ir, it means hairy goat. Demonology • • • • In Gen 27 Jacob used the same word to describe Esau! 11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy goat man (aish sa’ir) while I have smooth skin. (my translation). Ever hear a child call another child a pig face? Same idea. It doesn’t mean in Isaiah that there are beings that are half goat. Demonology • • So why is it hairy goat instead of just goat? Aren’t all goats hairy? A hairy goat is a way of saying a wild goat, a goat who is more unkept. Demonology • • lillith in Hebrew is lalit it means screeching owl. The best translation for this verse is GOD'S WORD Translation Hyenas will meet with jackals. Male goats will call to their mates. Screech owls will rest there and find a resting place for themselves. Demonology • • Why does this happen? Because people are people and they always try to make the Bible more fantastical then it really is. The Bible is plenty full of mysteries without having to add to it. Demonology • Now that we’ve covered that, we’ll look at the story of Saul and the witch of Endore. Demonology • • It’s generally taught that Saul spoke to the ghost of Samuel in the town of Endore via a Medium. What I want to show you was that he didn’t speak to Samuel at all, but rather to a demon impersonating Samuel. Demonology • • Now before we do this we first have to understand the words of Yeshua in Luke 16. Most people think that passage is about a parable concerning a rich man and Lazurus Demonology • • • However, it’s not a parable at all. All Hebraic parables start with words or phrases like, “It was like unto…” or “It was as if…” etc. etc. The story of Lazarus does NOT start out that way. It starts out… “There was a rich man…” Demonology • So right away, in a Jewish understanding, this isn’t a parable no matter what the headings in your Bible say (some headings list this as a parable) Demonology • So in this true story it says that Lazarus dies and is in Paradise with Abraham and the rich man who is over in hell asks him for a drop of water. Demonology • Abraham says to him that there’s a great gulf between them and no one can cross over to the other side. The rich man then asks to send someone back to his family and the answer is, they can't go back. Demonology • • So we learn from this that souls, after they pass, can NOT come back to earth. But what about what happened at the Mount of Transfiguration? Demonology • At Mt Tabor Yeshua spoke with Elijah and Moses but this was a one time thing. They were speaking to Him about the greatest event to ever take place in all of history… His death on the cross. 29And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. ( Luke 9:29-31 ESV) Demonology • • • Yeshua wasn’t just some sinful man, He was the son of G-d! This was the ONLY time this was allowed, never before or after. Keeping this in mind lets look now at the story of Saul in Endor. Demonology • As we read it, I’ll do a running commentary on the passage I Sam 28… Demonology • • • 3Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had removed from the land those who were mediums and spiritists. 4So the Philistines gathered together and came and camped in Shunem; and Saul gathered all Israel together and they camped in Gilboa. 5When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was afraid and his heart trembled greatly. Demonology • • • 6 When Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by prophets. (So we can deduce that Saul wasn’t in a good way with G-d, He wasn’t speaking to Saul in any fashion) 7Then Saul said to his servants, "Seek for me a woman who is a medium (So here we see proof that he wasn’t moving in the Spirit of G-d), that I may go to her and inquire of her." And his servants said to him, "Behold, there is a woman who is a medium at En-dor." 8Then Saul disguised himself by putting on other clothes (He disguised himself because he KNEW he was doing something wrong and he knew no witch would help him if they knew who he was), and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and he said, "Conjure up for me, please, and bring up for me whom I shall name to you.“ (Conjuring is not a good thing, he was asking her to perform witchcraft) Demonology • • • 9But the woman said to him, "Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those who are mediums and spiritists from the land. Why are you then laying a snare for my life to bring about my death?" 10Saul vowed to her by the LORD, saying, "As the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing." 11Then the woman said, "Whom shall I bring up for you?" And he said, "Bring up Samuel for me." Demonology • • • • • 12When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, "Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul." (Did Samuel really appear? The verse here in Hebrew says, “and she is seeing the woman Samuel” NOT that Samuel was there. Also, there are people who see Jesus in pictures in the typical American Church. That’s not what Yeshua looked like. He wasn’t blond haired and blue eyed, but ask them and they’ll say they saw Jesus, but it wasn’t really Him, it’s just what they saw.) 13The king said to her, "Do not be afraid; but what do you see?" And the woman said to Saul, "I see a divine being coming up out of the earth." (it doesn’t say divine being here, it says Olim, gods coming out of the earth, plural) (Sorry, but heaven isn’t in the earth. Things that come from heaven come from above, not so good things come up out from the earth) 14He said to her, "What is his form?" And she said, "An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped with a robe “ (It doesn’t say he’s wrapped with a robe, it says he’s muffled with a mantle, she couldn’t hear him properly or see him properly) And Saul knew that it was Samuel (Saul thought he knew. We often think we know things that we don’t actually know), and he bowed with his face to the ground and did homage. Demonology • 15Then Samuel said to Saul, (“Right there it says Samuel said to Saul, that proves it was actually Samuel!” No it doesn’t. If I animated a cartoon that looked like Samuel and I made it talk to you, you could say, “Samuel talked to me” it doesn’t mean that Samuel actually talked to you… just the image of him did and that’s exactly what happened here, the image of Samuel talked to him) "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" And Saul answered, "I am greatly distressed; for the Philistines are waging war against me, and God has departed from me and no longer answers me, either through prophets or by dreams; (from Saul’s own mouth he acknowledges that G-d had departed from him. If G-d didn’t want to speak to him… how in the world would He allow a Tzadik, righteous one, speak to him???) therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I should do." Demonology • • • 16Samuel (the image of Samuel) said, "Why then do you ask me, since the LORD has departed from you and has become your adversary? (If you’re an adversary of G-d, His Prophets wont be giving you advice) 17"The LORD has done accordingly as He spoke through me; for the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, to David. 18"As you did not obey the LORD and did not execute His fierce wrath on Amalek, so the LORD has done this thing to you this day. Demonology • • 19"Moreover the LORD will also give over Israel along with you into the hands of the Philistines, therefore tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. (Saul will be with Samuel??? Since when do adversaries of G-d go to where the righteous are??? They’ll be with that demon who is impersonating Samuel!) Indeed the LORD will give over the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines!" 20Then Saul immediately fell full length upon the ground and was very afraid because of the words of Samuel; also there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no food all day and all night. Demonology • This passage is NOT an example of a ghost and the ancient Rabbis knew that. Their theology was clear even though Saul had deceived himself into thinking he was actually talking to Samuel. Demonology • “Well what about the Nephalim? Weren’t they demons who had sex with human woman and had children that were half demon?” Demonology • Concerning the Nephilim: this is a time when it's important to know Hebrew and I'd suggest any and everyone to try and learn it. Demonology • • We offer classes here on most Shabbats (Saturday morning at 12:15, please ask for more info if interested after class) When reading this passage in Hebrew it makes perfect sense. Demonology • • • The word “nephil” in Hebrew means "giant". The masculine plural form is “nephilim”. All masculine plurals in Hebrew end in “im” (pronounced "eem"). Demonology • • • • Were there giants in ancient days? Yes there were. We know of Goliath in 1 Sam 17. But here's one of the misunderstandings… Demonology • We often think of giants in the way of the giant from say "Jack and the bean stalk.” Some humanoid form the size of a small skyscraper, or some other medieval conception. Demonology • • This was not what a giant was. Goliath was by most estimates nine feet tall. Demonology • • This term, giant, would include some of our NBA players of today, although they'd be a little short. There are some new excavations that have verified the existence of these "giants.” Demonology • Not far from our base in Sardinia in Italy they have uncovered tombs that are over nine feet in length. • This place is called "The Tomb of the Giants." Demonology • The tribe of Philistines from this area are called the "Shardana". • It’s where the word Sardinia comes from. Demonology • This very well may have been where Goliath was from. The Philistines prior to that were from farther north. We do know they were Caucasian and blue eyed (originally probably Nordic). Demonology • • • We can tell from the bones the pigmentation of ones skin. Also from their paintings of themselves we see the color of their eyes (blue). The Philistines that settled in Israel were mostly in the Gaza area. Demonology • Today you will see, from time to time, Palestinians from that area who still have the blue eyes and that is from when the Philistines mixed with the Arab populace centuries ago. Demonology • What happens with Genesis 6 is some will see the term "sons of G-d" and interpret that as meaning spirit beings. This is in no way true. Demonology • The sons of G-d simply means “righteous men”. • We see Yeshua use this same term in a very well known passage… Demonology • but those propagating a "super human race" or a half demon half human race haven't connected the dots. Demonology • You may remember this passage in Mt 5:9: Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called what??? Demonology • The sons of God!!! • There’s many passages that use that same term but no one tries to say it’s talking about half demon half human beings. Demonology • If the sons of G-d are some super human race who has faded out, or some demon race, then what does this mean in the New Testament in the words of Yeshua? Demonology • That they have come back? • No, it means righteous men. • So, what happened here in Genesis 6? Demonology • Well, back in the ancient days of Noah when there were still groups or tribes of large people who were around 12 feet tall, there were some righteous men who fell away from G-d and began marrying these women even though… Demonology • they were not girls who followed G-d and they had families with these women and they themselves turned their back on G-d. • That's it. Nothing more then that. Demonology • We know that spirits cannot have sex with people! • The Bible says in Matt 22:30… Demonology • For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. Demonology • • • So angles do not marry or reproduce, there's no need for them to. There are no "baby angels"! Demons are fallen angels so they too don't have reproductive organs. Demonology • So the idea that demons were having sex with women is simply ridicules. Demonology • The Bible is full of wonders, so we don't need to look for anything more fantastic then it already is. Demonology • There's no super-human race or race of half human and half demon. • Shabbat shalom
