Chapter 3 Summary
Zoey goes out on a warm winter night at 9 o clock. Vampyres can go out in daylight but the sun bothers
their eyes too much so she has school at night. Zoey meets her grandmother at Starbucks and her
grandmother calls her U-we-tsi-a-ge-ya the Cherokee word for granddaughter. Her grandmother wishes
she did not have to cover her tattoos when she goes out so she could see them. Then Zoey’s mother shows
up who they did not expect with a rectangular bakery box and a wrapped gift. Zoey gets annoyed quickly
by her mother’s responses and wish she had not ruined their night of celebration. Zoey remembers the day
her mother and her step-father came to the house of night and made it a nightmare. Her step-father is in
the people of faith church and they don’t believe in Vampyres religion and them existing and Zoey’s
mom just goes along with whatever he says. Zoey’s mom brings cake and Zoey hates the cheap overly
sweet cake her mother always buys. The cake is Christmas decorated and to Zoey but wait you don’t
celebrate Christmas anymore. Zoey celebrates Yule or Winter solstice. Zoey opens the present her
grandmother brought which is lavender and an old copy of Dracula. Then they talk about the author of
Dracula having a relationship with a vampyre and that is the reason he wrote Dracula. Zoey and her
grandmother keep arguing with Zoey’s mother because she won’t accept that Zoey is going to become an
adult vampyre or die if she doesn’t transform into one. Then Linda Zoey’s mother says why don’t we start
all over again. Then Zoey opens her mother’s gift and it’s the bible with their names on a bookmark.
Inside the book was their family tree of her, her mother, her brother, her sister, and her step-father. Zoey’s
biological dad left when she was a kid, all they would get from him were child support checks. Zoey
becomes outraged by the gift from her mother. Then Zoey knows that her mean step-father is near and
that her mother did not come alone. He comes out and Zoey throws the book at him and says to keep it
and he says that she is choosing evil. Then everybody gets mad and Zoey and her grandmother leave.
John, Zoey’s step-father, then says that their religion is tired from their evil beliefs and they are going to
change things.
Chapter 4 summary
Zoey’s grandmother tries to save the celebration of Zoey’s birthday. Her grandmother cheers her up by
saying Linda is a weak woman. Zoey tells her grandmother her problem with her friends. Her
grandmother advices her to clean up her boyfriend problems; Zoey has not seen Heath since his parents
took him to Cayman Islands for Christmas vacation. Zoey remembers when she had to save Heath from
undead vampyre’s and her befriend she thought was dead was the leader. Zoey has to keep this a secret
because Neferet can read people’s minds but not Zoey’s. Neferet finds out they will be in trouble because
Neferet is the one that is hiding them under tunnels. Zoey later on leaves telling her grandmother that she
is going back to home/school called the House of Night. Zoey goes to downtown instead looking for
Stevie Rae. Zoey has witnessed three fledglings die, everybody knew that they could die but did not know
they came back alive. She saw that the undead’s humanity was gone but Stevie Rae was not completely
gone. She also found out that Neferet was the one behind the fledgling’s undeadness; and she put a spell
over Zoey and Heath so they would not remember anything that happened under the abandoned Tulsa
tunnels. Zoey used her power of the five elements to clear her spell and remember everything and Heath
does not remember at all. She asks Nyk, their goddess, that it’s her birthday and all she asks for is to see
Stevie Rae. “Roll down your window” was all that came up in her head. She starts smelling this bad smell
that smells like musty basement and egg salad that has not been refrigerated and dirt all together. She
realizes that undead vampyre’s smell like that. Zoey finds Stevie Rae eating somebody she turns and
hisses at her. Stevie Rae tells her to go, Zoey wants to talk. Zoey says leave the person alone and come
and talk. Stevie Rae wants to finish and asks Zoey if she wants to join. Zoey uses her five elements
power, air, to push the homeless person away from Stevie Rae. Zoey wants to help her and take her back
to the House of Night. Zoey starts talking about things they would when Stevie Rae was a vampyre, she
starts acting like herself again only for a brief moment. Stevie Rae is really hungry and she needs human
blood if not she gets a really awful pain of hunger. Zoey made a plan to meet Stevie Rae tomorrow at 3
A.M to bring her clean clothes and food.
