Seeing Through Computers

How does computer use shape our thinking?
Advice: Start with a discussion of your
personal experience, including how this
online discussion is shaped by the use of
computers, and very quickly dig into a
discussion of Turkel's argument. Pay close
attention to the following concepts: the
evolution of the use of the concept
transparency, the use of algorithms to imitate
and predict human behaviors, the examples
of CAD and telephones, and Turkel's
discussion of "the culture of simulation."
Is Google Making Us Stupid?

How does computer use shape our thinking?
Advice:You've already had the opportunity
to discuss this question on a personal level
with "Seeing Through Computers," so dig
into the concepts discussed by Carr in
relation to the question: Lewis Mumford’s
analysis of the mechanical clock, Taylorism,
the development of writing and the printing
press, and potential cultural losses that may
result from highly efficient means of
communication.

“I am the monarch of all I survey, My right there is none to
dispute.”
Feature(s) of the Hallowell farm
“Renew thyself completely each day; do it again, and again, forever
again” (5).
“I went into the woods because I wished to live my life deliberately,
to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn
what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I
had not lived” (6).
“Weather this danger and you are safe, for the rest of the way is
down hill” (9).
“My instinct tells me that my head is an organ for burrowing, as
some creatures use their snout and fore paws, and with it I would
mine and burrow my way through these hills. I think that the
richest vein is somewhere hereabouts; so by the divining-rod and
thin rising vapors I judge; and here I will begin to mine.”
