The Hispanic Student Association Gerardo Colunga, Jr. Scholarship Description: The Gerardo Colunga, Jr. Scholarship is given to a Hispanic Student Association member, which includes Executive Board Members, who has demonstrated outstanding service and dedication to the organization throughout the year. This award is in remembrance of Gerardo Colunga, Jr., an influential individual, who has molded the Hispanic Student Association’s past, future, and present through his accomplishments and dedication for the organization. This scholarship encourages HSA members to follow Gerardo Colunga, Jr.’s examples, so that they too can make a lasting impression on the Hispanic Student Association. Requirements: To be eligible for the Gerardo Colunga, Jr. Scholarship, one must meet the following requirements: Must be an active member of the Hispanic Student Association. During the current academic school year, each semester dues that the member has participated in are paid in full. The member has completed three community service events, three fundraising events, one culture event, and one academic event before Pachanga. Must be enrolled as a full time student in the University of Texas at San Antonio. The member must be enrolled with the minimum of 12 credit hours in the current semester. The member must also be enrolled for the next academic school year as a full time student. Must have a minimum of a 2.50 cumulative GPA. Must write an essay related to the topic provided by the Hispanic Student Association. Essay Format: In order to produce a fair and unbiased opportunity for all applicants, the following format is mandatory: A cover letter will be provided and must be attached to the essay, along with the appropriate documentation proving enrollment in the University of Texas at San Antonio. The cover letter will serve as an identification form for the Academic Chair, containing the applicant’s information and requirements. The Academic Chair will assign a number to each entry, so that the applicant’s information is not present anywhere on the essay. This ensures an unbiased evaluation for the application. The scholarship essay must be inspired by the following suggested topic: How has the Hispanic Student Association affected the applicant’s college career? How will this experience influence them, in the future, to become a better citizen for the Hispanic community? The essay must follow traditional, linear composition. Typed, doubled-spaced 12-point Times New Roman 1 inch margins Must use current edition of MLA or APA format. MLA Format For this application, the heading of the member’s name, professor’s name, course, and date, is eliminated. As well as having the member’s last name attached to the page number. APA Format For this application, the cover letter is already provided and does not need an abstract. The required length of the essay must be 2 pages, consisting of 400 to 600 words. An original title of the essay is recommended, but not required. Evaluation: All entries submitted before or on the due date, shall be considered for the Gerardo Colunga, Jr. Scholarship. The essay portion of the application shall be evaluated by the Hispanic Student Association’s President and Pachanga Head.
