2009 Exhibition of School Planning and Architecture Clear Creek Education Village League City, Texas Other-K-12 Project of Distinction-New Construction Clear Creek Education Village Elementary School Intermediate School High School “Define the area” Community Environment: The Education Village is situated in a quadrant of the School District that is separated from the remaining parts of the District due to natural features, waterways and highways. This portion of the District is primarily residential and has the least amount of commercial business and economic vitality. This entire portion of the community is lacking a central focal point and needed a facility to "define the area" and serve as a beacon to the community. “Educational and community hub” Community Environment: Continued… The Clear Creek ISD Education Village is an educational and community "hub". This unique multi-use complex houses an elementary school, an intermediate school and a high school in one synergistic multi-campus structure that also functions as a community center and as the "centerof-community". “Pods, houses & small learning communities” Learning Environment: Overall, the Ed Village houses more than 4,600 students and stretches over 135 acres. To respond to educational goals established by the Planning Team, the architect tailored a combination of "pods", "houses" and "small learning communities" to each individual campus in order to create smaller, more personalized learning spaces for all students while still maintaining flexibility to accommodate future changes in educational delivery. “Pods” Learning Environment: The elementary school is divided into three "pods" creating independent learning environments for different primary school age students. The intermediate school provides an interactive environment where all classroom spaces are commonly located in a two-story "house" that is arranged to accommodate interdisciplinary teams. The high school utilizes small learning communities. “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” Physical Environment : The Ed Village offers three educational environments that synergize with the site in a manner that creates a very unique, comprehensive learning community where "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts". “Cohesive pathway of education” Physical Environment: Both physically and functionally, each independent learning environment relies on the other to create a cohesive pathway of education for students, while at the same time providing efficient, cost-saving measures by taking advantage of shared use of common spaces like cafeterias, gymnasiums and courtyards, as well as a high school level auditorium and natatorium complex. “Interactive Charrette Process” Planning Process: The architect utilized an interactive "charrette" process to involve students, parents, district administrators, city officials, community members and the contractor during the design phases for this unique campus. “Safe and Secure” Planning Process: Through the programming and design phases, key objectives emerged: ensure a "safe and secure" campus; allow each campus to have its own identity; and make each campus feel like a small community within a larger village.
