Essay Assignment: Write a response in which you select one or two character trait(s) of Sojourner Truth and use textual
evidence from “Ain’t I a Woman” to support your assertion. You may use the answers to your guided questions (see packet
from class) to help support your assertions. Use the following guidelines as you write your essay:
Paragraph 1:

Name of the character

Name of the speech

Background information on your character

Write a thesis statement which will tie into paragraph 2. (We will work on your thesis statement in class.) Paragraph
2 will describe a character trait.
Paragraph 2: (This should be a lengthy paragraph.)

Discuss one or two character traits of Sojourner Truth. Include textual evidence to support the traits.
Paragraph 3: Relate the character to the purpose of the essay

In your conclusion, explain what you have learned through the experiences of this character and how you feel about
what this character has been through.

Restate your thesis in different words.
Due Dates:

January 8 - Introductory paragraph which includes a thesis statement (25 points)

January 10 – Paragraph 2 (25 points)

January 14 – Paragraph 3 (25 points)

January 17 – Final copy of your essay; written or typed, indented paragraphs, no mark-throughs (100 points – test
grade)
Your final essay will be graded using a rubric you will be given in class.
