“Ain’t I a Woman” Sojourner Truth Mini Essay Rubric

Students will brainstorm the following topic in order to get ready for a mini-informal essay. Students will decide which of the rhetorical strategies is being used in the speech and denote which elements are employed to create those rhetorical elements (logs, ethos, and pathos). Students will select at least two of the forms of rhetoric and write a short essay with a précis thesis, two body paragraphs, and should not include a conclusion but will include a restated précis thesis. These will be due on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012. Type written essays are preferred, but these can be handwritten because they are informal. If they are typed, please print out and hand in.

This will be a mini essay and will not hold as much significance as a larger essay. The point of the essay is to see if the student can identify and explain how the rhetorical strategies are being used. Please use specific vocabulary surrounding the strategies and the elements used to create them. For example, “Bush uses anecdote to create pathos in the hearts of the

American people” or in the case of Angelou’s eulogy for Scott-King she used ethos, but she used connotative diction to create this. The student could write as an example, “Angelou used powerful connotative diction when she called Scott-

King ‘sister’.”

Please skip lines and do not write on the back. Students must use blue or black ink. If a mistake is made, simply cross out the mistake and write it on the skipped line or use the insert symbol and write above it. This is rough draft mode, but spelling, grammar, and mechanics will be graded. Editing is important. I will be happy to see all the editing on the paper.

Please attach this rubric, outline, and brainstorm to the essay. Staple in the following order or a five point deduction will occur: rubric, outline, essay, brain storm. MLA header must be on the first page, and on the left side, of the essay, not outline, or a five point deduction will be given as well. Please have a parent sign this page and return tomorrow.
