Team 3 Business 2200 November 19, 2012 Corporate Values & Responsibility Google started as a company founded by two Stanford computer science majors who created a search engine named back BackRub. Now today, BackRub has become Google, and is one of the most successful corporations in the world. Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. They have so far done such a successful job of this, and all we can see is them only improving it more and more as time moves on. Google’s vision is to deliver relevant results across all data sources- the Internet, a user’s local computer, and the corporate network. In pursuing this goal, Google maintains a large focus on the end user experience. Google provides many purposes throughout the corporate world. They believe the perfect search engine is one that “understands exactly what you mean and gives you back exactly what you want”. They provide lots of advertising opportunities for other businesses. Also, Google builds products in hope to advance the World Wide Web in so many ways, such as Google search or Google chrome. Google has 10 core values; Google wants to work with great people, technology innovation is Google’s lifeblood, working at Google is fun, be actively involved, don’t take success for granted, do the right thing, earn customer and user loyalty and respect everyday, sustainable long-term growth and profitability are key to Google’s success, Google cares about and supports the communities where employees work and live, and aspire to improve and change the world. When Google was first created, these ten values were the original ten that they claim that abide by. Over time, Google checks back to these values, and we can count on them to live up to these standards. Google’s social responsibility has been firmly committed to active philanthropy and addressing the global challenges of climate change, education, and poverty alleviation. Google’s philanthropy includes 145 million dollars to academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, and energy renewal. Google employees have also contributed more than 40,000 volunteer hours over 2012. Google thrives off of regular people using their search engine so they feel that it is necessary to give back to the people and the community by doing all of the above stated philanthropy work and for trying to find solutions to world problems, not just their own. Another great example of Google in action was when the 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck Western China. Immediately when this tragedy occurred, Google had people on the way to help out, and Google employees were able to raise over 2.6 million dollars. The structure of the corporation and communication from employee to employee is what really motivates Google employees. When all is said and done, without Google our world would not be in the place that it’s at today. As a whole, Google has done so much for our world. All of the advancements in applications available to us on the Internet as well as on our phones are just mind blowing. When most people use the Internet to search for something, 90 percent of the time we would say it is Google or another site created by the employees of Google. Everything that Google has done over the past 14 years has advanced our world in so many ways, and we believe that they will only continue growing the World Wide Web.
