Most talkative Most likely to be famous Most friendly Most hard-working Golden Globes • The Golden Globes are held every January in Beverly Hills, California • They are the third most watched awards ceremony in the world • It is broadcast to over 150 countries BAFTAS • The organisation BAFTA was started in 1947 as a charity to promote film-making • Every February, there is an awards ceremony in the Odeon cinema in London. • It is open to all countries, but there is a category for Best British Film and Best Newcomer. • The general public can choose the winner of the Rising Star award • Scotland and Wales also hold their own BAFTA ceremonies to celebrate films in their countries Cannes Film Festival • The Cannes Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world • It was meant to start in 1939, but was postponed until 1946 because of the Second World War • The most important prize is the ‘Palme d’Or,’ which is given to the best film Actors and actresses • • • Actors and actresses are the most important part of a film Not only do they act in films, but they are also popular celebrities Can you name these famous faces? British actors Other important people • Other important people in films are the director and the producer. • Britain has produced some excellent directors – let’s meet some of them! Alfred Hitchcock was born in 1899. He directed over 50 films (including “Psycho,” “The 39 Steps” and “Rebecca”) and he is most famous for creating suspense and fear in his work. H David Lean was born in Surrey in 1908. He directed lots of epic films, such as “Bridge on the River Kwai,” “A Passage to India” and “Lawrence of Arabia,” but also some shorter, but equally memorable films, such as “Great Expectations” and “Blithe Spirit.” Ridley Scott was born in South Shields in 1937. His films include “Black Hawk Down,” “Gladiator” and “Alien.” He is known for his attention to detail and many of his films have gained cultural status. His latest film, “Robin Hood,” based on the British legend, is out later this year. Famous British films • We think of Hollywood as the home of filmmaking, but Britain also has a history of making excellent films • One of the greatest British films of all time is called “Kind Hearts and Coronets” • It’s about a man, ..., who decides to kill his family members so he can become duke • Despite this description, it’s a very funny film!
