PROAP
Proap is a Landscape Architecture firm that was founded in 1989, in Lisbon. Its activity scope is mainly upon
the following fields:





Landscape design project;
Master planning;
Environmental assessment;
Project/construction management;
Urban design and planning.
PROAP gathers a wide group of landscape architects, architects, designers, plastic artists, who are
represented by João Nunes and Carlos Ribas. The work and research intentions of the office have been
mainly oriented according to a principle of intervention in landscape that recognizes its rules and functional
mechanisms.
PROAP GROUP
Building up a specific professional knowledge, with vague boundaries and global operational scope, the
initial company structure has developed in local branches and collaborators. Today the main seat in Lisbon,
Portugal, is linked to the office in Treviso, Italia, and Luanda, Angola. The group is composed of Landscape
Architects, Architects, Engineers and Artists.
To produce Landscape Architecture implies a confrontation with the territory and very often with other
professionals, usually Architects that design the built space. We have ongoing and consolidated through the
years joint ventures, which are flanked by new and fertile cooperations that develop into partnerships. The
necessity to dialogue with many different people took us towards a clear and dialogic approach, where the
landscape design is complementary and supportive towards architecture.
The complexity of the professional discipline demands for knowledge and different attitudes, in order to
give the creative and appropriate answer to the client. Gathering different professional disciplines and
uncommon knowledge takes us towards particularly innovative approaches, where form is joined to
technical and cultural contents.
TEAM
JOÃO NUNES
The general coordinator of PROAP is João Nunes, born in Lisbon in 1960. Graduated in Landscape
Architecture from “Instituto Superior de Agronomia da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa”, Master in
Landscape Architecture from ‘Escuela Tècnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcellona, Universitá
Politecnica di Catalunya’. João Nunes teaches at the same Institute where he graduated, he is professor of
Environmental Project at the Degree in Landscape, Urban and Environmental Planning from the “Universitá
degli Studi di Sassari, Facoltà di Architectura di Alghero”, professor of Project at the Graduate Course of
Architecture – Landscape Architecture at the IUAV, “Universitá di Venezia”, and extended his didactic
activity as a lecturer in seminaries at various schools, as Harvard, “Universitá di Girona”, “Escuela Tècnica
Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona”, “Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia”, “Politecnico di
Milano”, “Politecnico di Torino”, “Roma – La Sapienza”, “Roma Ludovico Quaroni”, and the “Facoltà di
Architettura di Napoli”, Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio.
Carlos Ribas was born in Lisbon in 1966. He graduated in Landscape Architecture at the Instituto Superior
de Agronomia da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. Since 1990 he developed his professional practice at the
studio PROAP, and has been one of its two managing partners since 2001. He has been a Lecturer of the
“Taller Internacional de Proyecto de Paisaje” of the Master in Landscape Architecture of Escuela Técnica
Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona in 2003 and 2009, of Progetto ITACA – training course under the
Sardinian Landscape Plan (Units: Urban Landscape and Tourism Landscape), based in Oristano, Sardinia,
Italy, in 2007. He has also been an Invited Assistant Lecturer of the Landscape Ecology discipline in the
Architecture Degree at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Viseu, Portugal between 2005 and 2007.
Iñaki Zoilo was born in Zaldibia, Basque Country, in 1972. He graduated in Architecture at Escola Técnica
Superior de Arquitectura de San Sebastian in 2001. He completed professional courses in Ecology and
Natural Systems at Instituto Superior de Agronomia, at Lisbon. Since 1999 he developed his professional
practice at the studio PROAP, and has been a shareholder since 2007. Involved in PROAP’s strategic
direction and management, oversees research and design projects to assure conceptual and artistic
coherence. As senior overall project manager is responsible for the coordination and implementation of all
projects. Leads the organisation and the development of the design competition teams in their conceptual
and technical execution. In 2001 he was an Assistant Lecturer of the discipline: Project, at the International
Seminar “Lisboa-Évora de la Metrópolis al Paisaje rural”, organized by Centro di Architecttura ACMA, and in
2009 he was also an Invited Lecturer at the international seminar of the “Master in Landscape
Architecture” at Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona. Frequently participates as guest
lecturer in international design and art workshops, representing PROAP.
Andrea Menegotto was born in Castelfranco Veneto (Italy) on April the 20th, 1969. He got Scientific high
school degree and then Architectural Degree in 1995 from IUAV University of Venice (Italy). From 1999 he
got into professional activity, collaborating with the office called d-recta, of which he became partner in
2007. His main activity was related to medium scale Project Management and Real Estate consultancy.
From late 2008 he founded PROAP Italia srl, as a branch office of PROAP Lisbon, whose activity is Landscape
Architecture. He is partner and CEO of this company.
Nuno Jacinto was born in Lisbon, in 1975. He graduated in Landscape Architecture at the Instituto Superior
de Agronomia da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 2006. Since 1998 he developed his professional practice
at the studio PROAP, and has been a shareholder since 2007. He participated in several seminars and
workshops in Portugal and Angola and in 2009 was an Invited Lecturer at an international seminar of the
“Master in Landscape Architecture” at Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona.
Sofia Castelo PROAP’s Representative in China. Born in Lisbon (Portugal), 08/02/1972. Graduated in
Landscape Architecture at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia of Lisbon Technical University. Has 15 years
of practice in Landscape Architecture and is based in Shanghai since 2011. Sofia is responsible for all
communications with clients in China.
