states would be free or slave.

4. The slave trade was abolished in
the District of Columbia.

5. The Fugitive Slave Act made any federal official
who did not arrest a runaway slave liable to pay a
fine. This was the most controversial part of the
Compromise of 1850 and caused many abolitionists
to increase their efforts against slavery.

 Sumner (MA senator) denounced the
Act on the senate floor
 Brooks (SC senator) approached
Sumner said he was insulted b/c he
was from the South and was related
to one of the act’s authors
 Brooks beat Sumner with a heavy
cane almost killing him

Dred Scott Decision (1587)
 Dred Scott, a slave in MO went with his
owner into a free territory where he
lived for 4 years
 His owner later returned to MO, where
he died
 Scott sued for his freedom

Dred Scott Decision (1587)
 SCOTUS ruled that he had no right to sue because as a
slave he was not a citizen
 Also declared that a slave owner could not be deprived
if is “property” without due process of law
 Struck down the Missouri Compromise because it was a
violation of the 5th amendment

Raid on Harper’s Ferry(1859)
 Group of radical abolitionist
led by John Brown
 Attacked the federal arsenal
at Harper’s Ferry
 Planned to seize weapons
and give them to slaves

Raid on Harper’s Ferry(1859)
 Plan failed when US troops under the
command of Robert E Lee surrounded the
arsenal and forced them to surrender
 Brown was hanged
 Many saw it as a sign that blood would
have to be shed for the South to protect
its way of life
