Anthony Kagle Jovana Salado Grammar Presentations: Run-ons and Comma Splices Today, Anthony and I will doing our grammar presentations on run-on sentences and comma splices. Run on sentences are sentence that are multiple independent sentence that are combined without any sort of fanboy or punctuation. A comma splice is used when two independent sentences are connected with a coma. This is wrong and must not be ever used in attempting to connect two independent sentences. 1. Anthony and I would present the class with definitions of rub-on sentences and comma splices. 2. Next, we will hand out a worksheet for the students to work on. 3. The student will go against their partner in the typical running to the board, and write out the sentence out correctly. 4. The winner will be the person who wrote the sentence correctly and explain it to the class. 5. In order to win a prize, or nothing at all, the student will have to shoot at a target using a nerf gun. If the student hits the candy portion of the target, they obviously win a candy bar. This method of learning will allows them to test their knowledge and also, most importantly, how to fix run on and comma splice sentences. Run-On Sentence Worksheet Fifteen of the following sentences are run-on sentences. Please correct each one of them on the lines below. Use all three ways to correct run-on sentences at least three times each (period, semicolon, comma plus coordinating conjunction). Five of them are correct. Write a C under each correct sentence. 1.
