Reading Memo I. To: Ms. Garcia From: Your Name Date: The date you begin writing your memo Re: Type of book, book title, author, and pages read (page # - page #) Example: Fiction Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry (pages 33-160) II. Summary (use your sticky notes to take bulleted notes) (5-7 sentences) Your summary should cover the main events of what you read for the week. There is a writing frame on the back. You do not have to use it, but it is there if you need it. III. Vocabulary While reading during the week: 1. Identify two words you are unfamiliar with (or not fully comfortable using) and write the word and the page number on your sticky note. When completing your reading memo: 1. Write the word, sentence, and page number (do not forget proper punctuation). 2. Write the part of speech and definition of the word. 3. Look up two synonyms for the word. 4. Create two sentences using the unfamiliar word. One sentence can come from an online source (e.g. Dictionary.com, Merriam-Webster.com). The other must be your own attempt (feel free to use another form of the word). Underline the word. Example: 1. Perceive: “Now, for the first time, Kira began to perceive the vastness from which the Singer created his song.” – p. 94 2. POS: verb Definition: to become aware of, know, or identify by means of senses 3. Note, discover 4a. We must also look in the mirror and try to understand how others perceive us. 4b. Our perception of the world around us shapes who we become and the choices we make. IV. Characterization Paragraph (1/2 page) Using appropriate evidence and citations, write a paragraph analyzing how actions and dialogue have helped developed a character in your novel. Use your example paragraphs from class if you need help formatting your response. V. Extra Credit Any written activity that relates to the book. Examples given in class. Reading Memo Format: 1) Memos should be typed. (If this is an issue, see me.) 2) Memos should contain few errors in grammar and spelling. 3) Sections I, II, and III should be on the front of your memo; sections IV should be on the back of your memo. 4) MLA heading is not required. 5) Title your memo with “Reading Memo” and follow the formatting of these instructions.
