GUIDES: A Template to educate and enhance assessment of risk factors
for childhood injury. This is an IRB approved project already in progress.
It aims to educate residents on the risk factors for child maltreatment
and teaches them a method to use to identify patients/ families at risk in
their continuity care clinics.
Pediatric ED use of Guidelines for Suspicion of Child Maltreatment
(created by Dr L. Quinn). There is currently a wide variation in the
documentation by nurses and physicians in the peds ED when a child
presents with an injury. In order to try and evaluate whether faculty are
even thinking about/ or considered the possibility of child maltreatment
in their differential and if they used the guidelines or not, I have created
a 5 question (Yes/No) document to be completed on children (still
deciding on age cut off) who present with any injury to our peds ED. I am
working on this project with Dr. C. Kaplan. We are currently trying to
work with EMR/IT people to figure out the logistics. The project will
include a chart review looking at pre-questionnaire documentation. This
will be a formal QI project.

Breast feeding education project for residents and the effect on
promoting exclusive breast feeding in the NBN and beyond. Based on
prior research done at SBUH by Dr. Apruzzese and Dr. Connolly, they
concluded that the educational interventions to promote exclusive
breast feeding in post partum mothers may be more effective if given
independent from the large amount of post-partum information mothers
already receive. This project aims to provide an educational intervention
before delivery in an effort to promote exclusive breast feeding.
Interested primip women in their third trimester who are followed by
UHSB OB and midwives will be contacted by phone by the pediatric
resident on Community Rotation who will give "scripted" information
about breastfeeding and address any questions the mother-to-be might
have regarding breast feeding. Follow-up will be at delivery in the NBN
and one month later (by phone) . I have already received permission
from the Department of OB/Gyn at Stony Brook. I will be working with
Dr. M. Connolly on this project. We do plan to get IRB approval. We are
currently working on the educational piece for the residents.
In conjunction with Stony Brook Injury Prevention Educator /
Coordinator and the Trauma Service Nurse for Pediatrics, this project is a
requirement for all residents; each will have a role in the development
and creation of the program.
