The Cask Of Amontillado written by Edgar Allan Introduction The Cask Of Amontillado written by Edgar Allan Poe is a story takes place in a carnival in Italy where Montresor is planning a revenge on Fortunato who humiliated him in a very painful way. Nevertheless the hate and anger to Fortunato was so big that Montresor lost his conscience and soon he did horrible acts. The characters are more static but Montresor showed “two faces” in order to convince Fortunato. The imagery is not the biggest element as in other Poe´s story and the symbolism and tone get linked by the classic arrogant Italian who has power and people deep inside want to see them pay for what they´ve done. Thesis Statement T.S. The resentment of a person can make him manipulate others to take his own revenge and twisted justice. First Element: Character´s Personalities Montresor: He's a very resentful person and he's very jealous of the achievements of others for example: Montrersor… "Come," I said, with decision, "we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible. Besides, there is Luchresi --" First Element: Character´s Personalities Fortunato: Is a very arrogant person that thinks knows everything like his opinion about Luchresi, Fortunato… "Let us go, nevertheless. The cold is merely nothing. Amontillado! You have been imposed upon. And as for Luchresi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado." Even Montresor at the begging saw the opportunity to attack from his best weakness arrogance. Second Element: Figurative Language After Montresor found Fortunato drunk he convinced him to come to his house to the catacombs. He told him that he bought a great wine "Amontillado in a Barrel", which was intriguing for Fortunato because he was a wine knower and he had many curiosity to prove that his friend was wrong. Montresor feed with hate told him the wine was in a part and handcuff him. Fortunato was so confused he didn't do anything. Soon Montresor started building a wall and with the time Fortunato told him it was a great joke and they needed to go, the scary part was the moment Fortunato realized it wasn't a joke and that he would die and stop screaming. This story has many interesting purposes for example it teaches you that you need to respect your friends and you don’t have to make the huge mistake of not having the “feet on the ground” and interfering in the feeling and the reputation of others. Conclusion Montresor illustrated the picture of how the repression of something you lived can affect your acts and produce in people a thirst for revenge. This story can be compared to realities that people live daily and it can be define as a classic story with a huge part to learn.
