Religions have differing views on evolution

-Christianity

-Judaism

21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

- Many are Christians

-divine power created life

-Bible holds the truth

Universe and Life created suddenly, out of nothing

Earth created “relatively recently” , geologic features resulted from a flood

All “kinds” of living organisms were created supernaturally

Humans and modern apes have separate ancestors

-Bible as stories to guide people

-Natural selection as God’s method of shaping world

-God created world, evolution created diversity among species

• Former Pope John Paul II- “more than a hypothesis”

• Current Pope Benedict XVI- -cautious of evolution

• evolution occurred with help of a higher power

Catholic Schools:

- teaches evolution

-3 Main sects:

-Orthodox- most traditional

-Chabad- part of Orthodox movement, very traditional

-Conservative and Reform- more liberal

-evolution does not coincide with the Torah

-trying to find link between Torah and science

-Rabbi’s believe Earth is older than scientists believe

-God controls all life

- “borei-u-manhig”- Hebrew for manipulator/creator

“Evolution and Genesis both agree that man began as a hunk of mud. Evolution says that if you leave enough mud alone for long enough, it will eventually become a human being who will build computers and spaceships. Genesis says you need an intelligent force for that to happen”

Rabbi Moshe Feinstein:

-wanted pages on evolution ripped out of textbooks

Decided biology was “prized discipline” making evolution legitimate theory

Orthodox scientists view:

-evolution generated diversity…. With help of divine power

-no official response to evolution

-some Conservative Rabbi’s teach that God created world and life, but not how creation exists

-Torah not meant to be read literally, just interpreted

-Evolution based on scientific method

-problem, hypothesis, collect/analyze data, conclusion

-Religion

-supernatural being, communication with divine spirit

-scared objects, rituals

Life existed in present form since beginning of time:

-70% Evangelical Protestants agree

-32% Protestants

31% of Catholics

-Religions will never see eye-to-eye on the theory of evolution

-Differing views within each religious group

-still practice religion without agreeing

Creationists: literal view of Genesis

Christians: evolution is hypothesis, Bible is a guide

Judaism: Torah interrupted, God created life
