February 2012 Agenda Audubon Agenda If sin comes into the life of the believer, he should immediately become concerned about it. It should cause him to rush to the Lord in confession and repentance, and it should cause him to build every bulwark possible against the recurrence of the sin. ~ Donald Grey Barnhouse “We are all distorted by the fall. Though substantively changed at conversion, meditation on God's Word counters remaining sin.” Those penetrating words from Jim Elliff serve as a good introduction to our subject this month: Original sin and our remaining sin. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (GEN. 1:1). God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good (GEN. 1:31). The LORD God commanded the man [Adam], saying, ‘You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die’ (GEN. 2:16-17). When the woman [Eve] saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked (GEN. 3:6-7). That is the story of Original Sin. The apostle Paul sums up the story in one short verse that shows the origin of our sin and our coresponsibility in it: Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned (ROM. 5:12). Though men may think that the story of the fall of man is a fairy tale, and Christianity not to be taken seriously, this story is real. Christian apologist G.K. Chesterton, often called the Prince of Paradox, said...theologians dispute original sin, which is the only part of Christian theology which can really be proved. Some followers...admit divine sinlessness, which they cannot see even in their dreams. But they essentially deny human sin, which they can see in the street. The strongest saints and the strongest sceptics alike took positive evil as the starting-point of their argument. Even Fox News recently said, Politics and the concept of Original sin are two topics the mainstream media rarely discuss side by side, but perhaps they should. But when the church of our day lives in sinful denial of this doctrine, don’t expect the media to discuss it in this political season. Nineteeth century evangelist Charles Finney (the father of much modern-day evangelism) called the doctrine of Original Sin, subversive of the gospel, and repulsive to human intelligence. What!? Sadly, that same thinking is still too much in protestant pulpits today. The fact is, every believer has been delivered from all of his sins, even his Original sin (COL. 2:13). God is now assuredly at work in him. Amen! (PHIL. 1:6; 2:12-13). His sin is no longer President, but Resident. His sin is no longer Reigning, but Remaining. continued Audubon Agenda February 2012 Two things in sin chiefly move the godly to mourn for it. One is the dishonor it brings to God. The other is the perdition it brings on the sinner. ~ David Dickson Wilt Thou forgive that sin where I begun, which was my sin, though it were done before? ~ John Donne Earthly Paradise may be forever lost, but Paradise Regained awaits (LUKE 23:43)!
