) was born on 6 Mar

1846 at Martian Co., Indiana. He married Mary Elizabeth Bruner (6447), daughter of John

Bruner (6452) and Suanna Franklin (6453), on 27 Feb 1870 at Martian Co., Indiana; Marriage date is recorded in Martin Co., Ind. marriage records - Book 3, page 8. He died on 22 Aug 1903 at Martin Co., Indiana, at age 57.

He Notes for WALTER W. HITT:

Was a circuit-riding bailiff in Martin Co., Indiana.

Had an argument with his brother, Charles, over money & land they both owned, so Walter loaded his furniture in a wagon, gathered livestock, etc. & moved to Knox Co., Indiana, where he farmed for someone else. He apparently moved back to Martin co. because that is where he died and is buried at Fairview Cemetery (at Rusk).

Walter's brother, uncle, or cousin drove a 12-horse team in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.

Whoever this Hitt relative was, apparently killed a man in a bar fight in Shoals, Martin Co.,

Indiana, so left that area to go "west". After his stint with Buffalo Bill, he lived in Dennison,

Texas.

Walter was at age of death: 57 years, 5 months, & 16 days.

"Uncle Bill/Will" lived to be about 96. He never owned a car (probably never learned to drive); walked miles to wherever he wanted to go.

Spent most of his life around Verne, Indiana; worked as farmhand.

Never married. He apparently loved a woman who married someone else, & he never got over her. When her husband served in the military(?), Uncle Bill would walk over to her house, cut & split cords of wood for her, see if she needed any supplies, then walk back home.

In his last few years, he would hit his legs with his cane & laughingly say they were petrified.

136 was born on 13 Apr 1865 at Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa. She and George Emory Reinhart (295) were divorced; LaNora Besson says she and Bill Ross have found a divorce decree "Laura M.

Reinhart from George Reinhart. She married George Emory Reinhart (295), son of Geroge

Reinhart (250) and Unknown (--?--) (313), on 11 Sep 1880 at Appleton, Swift Co., Minnesota.

She married Jasper Newt Church (296) on 24 Oct 1919 at Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington. She died on 13 Feb 1936 at Bend, Deschutes Co., Oregon, at age 70.

137 She was buried on 16 Feb

1936 at Pilot Butte Cemetery, Bend, Deschutes Co., Oregon.

Biography Information for The following was written by Beverly Lucille Reinhart-Hamby grand daughter of Laura Meeker Hitt to James D. Hitt in a letter dated Sept 18.1998. * What I know about Laura Meeker Hitt. According to family legend David Hitt went to the California gold rush

his partners last name Meeker, that is how Laura got the middle name Meeker. While David was home for Laura's birth, Meeker sold the mine and disappeared. Laura supposedly kept looking for him (Meeker). In 1907 when my father Lee Henderson Reinhart was 10 years old Laura left him at his oldest brothers home (David Raymond) and took Susan with her to the state of

Washington. She never returned to Iowa and family that I know of. She did not find Meeker, but she did meet Jasper Newt Church and married him. My father never talked much about his parents so to my knowledge of Laura and George were never divorced. George died in 1919.

Newt worked for Pacific Light and Power. He transferred from Washington to Bend, Oregon.

When we moved to Oregon in 1935 they were living in Bend. The only things I remember about

Laura is her beautiful wrinkle free skin and that she played the piano. I remember her as being a beautiful woman. I do not remember her as appearing to be 70years old. In 1935 my father lost his job in Minnesota. Laura was sure he could get a job in Bend. So in August 1935 Lee with his wife and 8 children, the oldest was 20 the youngest 6 weeks, made the trip to Oregon. Lee and his family stayed with Laura for several months .Lee got a job 3 days a week at the Shevlin-

Hixon Lumber Mill. He worked in the power plant. Most of hid life he worked with steam equipment or steam generation. I was 4 years old when we moved to Bend, so I have few memories of Laura.

****************************************************************************

The following comes from an e-mail dated 22 Oct 2005 from LaNora Besson a GG Grand daughter of L.M. Hitt-Reinhart-Church.

There are some odd things on the web (see above)about my great grandmother that I would like to see corrected. Laura Meeker Hitt Reinhart was unhappy. She left her husband George Emory Reinhart and took her youngest daughter with her. They left in search of David Meeker who was supposed to have money that was owed to her. I don't know if she found him. Along the way she divorced George Reinhart. Then she married Jasper Church. Bill

Ross and I found the divorce decree and have a general idea of where she got married to Church.

Church worked for the electric company in Bend during the depression.

Life was rough in Minnesota and my grandfather lost his Dodge garage and threshing equipment when the bank foreclosed on them. Laura Hitt

Reinhart Church sent packages and money to Lee Reinhart and his family on a regular basis. My mother and my aunt, Virginia Reinhart Hamilton, were talking about the gifts yesterday and how much they always looked forward to them. They received fabric for new clothes, presents for the children, and money. The first time Lee and his family visited Bend was about 1924 or 1925. They continued to live in Minnesota. In the early

1930's Laura persuaded her son Lee that there was work in Bend. She sent all the money they needed for the trip and opened her home to Lee and

Gladys, and their eight children. My mother, Bernadine Reinhart Besson, who was attending high school at the time, lived with Laura for a number of months during Laura's final illness.

Bill (Leslie W. Ross)and I have been working on the family of George Emory Reinhart and were making good progress.

Jan 1840 at Missouri. He married Maggie Allen (7136). He died after 1903 at Texas (belived to be); 1. When his father's estate was probated on 8 February 1897, Jim was living in Texas.

According to Anita Langford Jesssup James and Maggie acompaned son John Monroe to Mexico which was in 1903or 04.

He George Blalock was, at one time, Sheriff of Pearce Co., Oklahoma, and as such he traveled to

Mexico looking for a runaway crook. About the same time Mexico was looking for people to settle some areas where they had no people. They offered free land to people who would move there and settle. George liked what he saw in Mexico and began to organize "colonies" to move to Mexico and settle. Many people from the Altus, OK area agreed to do that and became part of these colonies.

As best we can tell, there were at least three Blalock Colonies. My grandmother, Sula Hitt

Fraley, told me the story of the colony she lived in as a child. We believe her family lived in

Mexico in the early 1900's. They were part of the second colony and their colony was in Charkalargo, Mexico, which was about

16 miles from Mexico City. Today Mexico City has grown to include this area. My family members in the second colony were my great-great grandparents, James Monroe Hitt and

Maggie (Magey) Allen Hitt, their son, John Monroe Hitt (my great-grandfather) and his wife,

Nancy Vedester Burgess Hitt, and John and Dester's children (including my grandmother, Sula). They traveled by train with all their posessions, including their livestock.

My grandmother said they were on the train one day less than a month. These family members returned to the United States after about two years due to ill health and to their fear of the increasing unrest in Mexico.

Walter Hitt, who was James Monroe's son and John Monroe's brother, was a part of the third colony and that colony went to Tamulipas Mexico. Several of Walter's children were born during the time they lived in Mexico. A number of other family members also were part of this colony and at least one died there. It is my understanding that during the time of this third colony, the

Mexican Revolution started and most of the people in the colony left and returned to the States. I was told that they went out in sealed cattle cars with government troops guarding their safety.

Some of the people were able to return to Mexico after the revolution was over and reclaimed some of their property that had been left behind but others lost everything.

It was not until I found some of Walter's family and shared information that I realized that not all of the colonies were in the same place. Evidently the Tamulipas Colony was the most sucessful.

For a number of years the former residents of the Tamulipas Colonies held reunions. We are still learning about these and would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about what happened during that time.
