On behalf of the School of Education and the Department of ____________ at the
University of Alabama at Birmingham, we are pleased to offer you a full-time temporary
appointment as a Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor. This is a non tenure track, one
year appointment with the term of the appointment to begin on August 15, 20XX and to
extend through May 14, 20XX. Please review the UAB Faculty Handbook for information

This is a nine-month appointment. Your nine-month annual salary will be $___________
for university academic period, August 15, 20XX thru May 14, 20XX. You will be
expected to participate in faculty orientation during the first few weeks of your
appointment. This position also carries a substantial and valuable body of fringe benefits

You will be responsible to the Dean and by his delegation to the Chair of your department.
Your duties will include the following:




All faculty appointments are subject to final approval by the President and the Provost of
the University of Alabama at Birmingham and are governed by the rules, orders, and
regulations of the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama System. We anticipate
no difficulty with these steps.
This offer is contingent upon your providing acceptable documentation of employment
eligibility within three business days of employment in accordance with the Immigration
Reform and Control Act of 1986. This will require that you complete an Employment
Eligibility Verification form (I-9) and provide original documentation which offers proof
of employment eligibility. For further information on the documents that are accepted for
employment eligibility, please refer the I-9 form which, for your convenience, is located at:

An official transcript of your terminal (Ph.D. or MFA) degree or Master’s degree (as well
as evidence of 18 hours of completed graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline
should the Master’s not be finished) must also be submitted to comply with credentialing
guidelines of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Foreign
transcripts must be translated and certified by an education credentialing agency. Please
request that the institution from which you received this degree send an official transcript
of your academic record to the attention of Kathy Lowe Tubbs, School of Education,
Dean’s Office, 1720 2nd Avenue South, EB 217, Birmingham, AL 35298-1250, by June
1, 20XX.
Please note that the University of Alabama at Birmingham conducts a review of the Office
of the Inspector General (OIG) and the General Services Administration (GSA) exclusions
lists to establish eligibility for each faculty member to receive federal funding. These
databases are maintained by the federal Government to identify individuals who are
excluded from participating in payments by Federal programs or contracts.
Additionally, the university conducts pre-employment background investigations on final
candidates. The review includes a criminal history background check, degree (education)
verification and employment history verification. You will receive information
electronically requesting your consent to allow the university to conduct this investigation.
In the event that the background check has not been completed at the time your
appointment begins, your appointment will be conditioned upon receipt of a background
check report that is acceptable to the university. Before a final decision is made to rescind
an appointment because of a background check result, you will receive a copy of the
background check report and you will have an opportunity to provide explanatory
information.
