Troy/ Archaeology
Aims and objectives:
1) Gaining greater knowledge about the story of the Trojan War and its depiction in both
ancient literature and modern film.
2) To analyse various archaeological sources, make personal responses and draw
considered conclusions.

1) Timeline from previous lesson
1) Identify time lapse between the
Bronze Age and Homer. Briefly
discuss Iliad and oral tradition.
4-8
2) Golden apple cartoon and
judgement of Paris.
2) Read cartoon to lead into a
brief discussion about what led to
the Trojan War.
9-12
3) Troy trailer clip (2.10)
3) Watch clip and consider how
the city of Troy is depicted in the
film e.g. geography, buildings and
size.
13-25
4) Source packs for each group (3-4)
and a question sheet each group.
4) In groups of 3-4, use the packs
of sources and answer questions
on the sheet ‘The Truth about
Troy’.
26-35
5) 3.15- Assyrian reliefs.
5) Class discussion reviewing
each question. Finish with clip
about Assyrian siege engines.
6) Refer pupils to firefly for
homework.
-Watch clip from Troy about the duel
between Hector and Achilles.
- Listen to clip from Iliad, book 24
- Put input into Firefly Forum: ‘Which
depiction of the duel between Hector
and Achilles is more effective and
why?’
