Plans for Staff Development Training on February 17, 2014
Principals,
The following information should be helpful to you as you plan for the Staff Development
day. You may determine the sequence and specific times for the training sessions in
Grades 1-5 on that day. Thank you for your leadership with the training and development
of teachers.
 Overview of the Day 
• Kindergarten Teachers:
A 3-hour training is planned for kindergarten teachers from 8:30-11:30 a.m. (see
attached locations). While the bulk of the training will be literacy-based, a modified
version of Quality Questioning: Part II will also be included. For additional information
about the kindergarten training, contact Lynn Smith.
• Teachers in Grades 1-5:
A 2-hour training is planned for teachers in Grades 1-5 highlighting Quality Questioning:
Part II. The core-content specialists have developed the PowerPoint presentation that
will be facilitated by the Principal and/or Associate Principal to teachers of Grades 1-5.
The specialists will conduct an Elluminate session on February 3rd at 3:30 p.m. for the
administrators who will be facilitating the training session. All materials will be shared at
that time.
• Teachers in Grade 3-5:
Based on the feedback received at the October 2013 principals’ meeting, training on
how to best utilize NWEA results as a tool for instructional planning is needed.
Therefore, the School Testing Coordinators (STCs) will conduct a 2-hour workshop (at
each school) on Descartes and Instructional Laddering for teachers of Grades 3-5.
Grade level teams will analyze their Winter 2014 MAPS data to determine a specific
instructional focus (reading or math). Grade levels will then drill down to a reporting
category and will proceed to build a differentiated instructional ladder using Descartes
and state standards. For additional information, contact Yvonne Fawcett.
Please know that any unencumbered time on Feb. 17th should be spent working on
specific professional development needs of the school as outlined in your school's CSIP.
As an option, though not required, your school librarian is prepared to share a variety of
electronic resources available to all HCPS students that can be used across grade and
content areas. In addition, teachers and grade levels may wish to spend time examining
resources available in the school bookroom and make plans for utilizing them for small
group reading instruction.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
