Activity Plan Name: Lesson Title: Grade and Subject Area: Lesson Duration: Alyssia Harper Healthy Eating and Fast Food 6th grade Wellness 90 minutes (probably two days) Objective(s): Students will understand the importance of healthy eating and its benefit to the common good. Related Standard(s): Standard 4: The student will understand the relationship of physical activity and rest to healthy living. Standard 9: The student will understand attitudes and behaviors for preventing and controlling disease. Materials: DVD of “Super Size Me” Educational Version, DVD player, construction paper, markers, computer with internet access, stapler Procedure/Activity Students will come in and take a seat with the song “Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut” playing. They will have a list of discussion questions that include: do they know anyone who has been on a diet recently, when and where was the last time they had fast food, do they believe that the can eat healthy at a fast food restaurant, and what do they know about the health issues facing eating mostly fast food? Watch the video “Super-Size Me” and take guided notes from the sheet given to them if they would like to take notes that way. (See attached sheet) On-going assessment The movie will be paused periodically to ensure that all of the students are on the same page and taking notes. If a student is missing a question they may work with a partner to find this out. Differentiation Students will choose where they sit based on their favorite foods from the food pyramid. Students will have a choice of using the guided note taking practice or they may take their own notes, but they are told that they will ne completing a project at the end of this and their notes will be very helpful. Students can choose to also take notes on their own, with a partner, or with a group. Discuss the facts of the video and how it has changed the way that they think about fast food. Students will then complete a “three minute pause” with their group with includes the questions: I changed my attitude about… I related to…. I became more aware of… I agree/disagree with …. I thought ______was interesting because… I was surprised about… Students will they use the computer to locate facts Students will complete a 3-2from the CDC on childhood obesity. 1 sheet after reading the http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/childhood/index.html material. Students will then use the computers to look at Lifelines will be used to check their favorite restaurants website. They will need students understanding. to look at their menu, their food labels, and if they have any healthy options. Sharing of new material Individual project completion Assessment Product: Students will use a think-pairshare method to tell others of what they have learned. Monitor students as they select and work on their Shape Ups. Make sure to discuss choices with students who may have difficulty completing some of them. Students can choose to graph their food labels, take basic notes on their meal, or print off the visuals from the website. Shape ups (students are given a three shapes that has a small project in each cell; they must chose 1 project from each shape.) See attached sheet. Complete a paper with your findings or create a bar graph on the calories, fats, sugars, carbs, and vitamins you are receiving compared to what you should be receiving. Survey your classmates and parents and find out how often they eat fast food. What restaurant do they usual go to? And, what do they usually eat? Analyze the data to determine whether or not the classmates and parents are eating healthy or not. Complete the “Super Size Me” Essay Assignment. See attachment. Create a PowerPoint, flyer, or piece of art letting others know the advantages of living a health lifestyle. Create a book showing alternative to popular fast food meals. This can be meals you can order at the restaurant or meals you can make at home. Choose 5 restaurants.
