Audition Requirements for Entering Freshmen and Transfer Students
Auditions are required for both entry into the music program
and for consideration for a music scholarship.
Voice (other than Musical Theatre): o Sing two songs from memory with piano accompaniment: o Selection 1 may be anything that shows off your voice to its fullest. This could be a popular song, a song from a Broadway show, a sacred selection, etc. o Selection 2 should be from the standard repertoire for voice. We strongly recommend the inclusion of one song in a foreign language. Suggested collections include 1) The First Book of Baritone (or Soprano, etc.); 2) The Young Singer, Tenor (or Bass ) Songs (Boosey &
Hawkes); Expressive Singing Song Anthology ; 24 Classic Italian Songs ; Fifty Selected Songs ; etc.
o Sightreading will be required of vocal students who are requesting a music scholarship. o Students interested in vocal studies may call 910-775-4152 or email Dr. Jaeyoon Kim for suggestions of songs or other appropriate audition materials.
Voice - Musical Theatre: o Perform two pieces from memory: First selection should be from the Broadway repertoire.
Second selection can be either Broadway or classical. o Also perform a monologue one minute in length. o There is no dance call for acceptance into the program. o Students interested in Musical Theatre may call 910-521-6881 or email Hal Davis for suggestions of songs or choice of material.
Keyboard (Piano or Organ) Requirements: o Perform two selections of contrasting styles, preferably by memory for pianists. o Play major scales, hands together, two octaves. o Sight read a short selection.
Wind (Woodwind and Brass) Requirements: o Play a selection from the standard repertoire for your instrument. The use of accompaniment is encouraged but not required. o Play major scales and arpeggios (number of octaves determined by instrument). o Sight read a short selection.
Guitar Requirements: o Play two selections from the standard repertoire for your instrument. o Play major scales. o Sight read a short selection.
Bowed String Requirements: o Play one selection from the standard repertoire for your instrument. o Play one major scale and the corresponding arpeggio. o Sight read a short selection.
Percussion Requirements
All students wishing to major in music with a percussion emphasis, or to perform with the UNCP
Percussion Ensemble must audition. Suggested repertoire is as follows: o Snare Drum :

1 Rudimental solo - Hurley, Pratt, etc.
•
1 Concert solo or etude - Cirone, Delecluse, Lepak, Firth, etc.
•
Play a concert style roll which crescendos from piano to fortissimo, and decrescendos back to piano over one minute. o Keyboards :
•
1 Two mallet solo or etude - ragtime solos, all state etudes, etc.
•
1 Four mallet solo (not required, but highly recommended).
•
Major scales and arpeggios – 3 octaves o Timpani:
• 1 Solo or etude - Firth, Goodman, Hinger, Beck, etc.
•
Tuning and pitch matching will be tested.
Drum set and world percussion are not required for the audition.
Keyboard and/or snare drum sight reading will be required of all who audition.
Drumset Requirements:
Students in either of the BA degrees may choose drumset as their prinicpal instrument. There will be sightreading of both drumset charts and snare drum music on the audition. o Styles:
Demonstrate the following styles with a “play along” CD music track
• 12 Bar Blues Shuffle (w/ backbeat on 2 & 4)
• 12 Bar Blues Jazz Time, Medium Tempo (“Freddie the Freeloader”)
• Bossa Nova. High Hat, then Ride Cymbal, High Hat on 2 & 4. (“Girl from Impanema”,
“Blue Bossa”)
• Funk/R&B Groove (“Cold Sweat”, James Brown)
• Afro Cuba Mambo (“Mambo Inn”)
• 6/8 Afro Cuban Bembe (“Footprints”) o Technique:
• 3 Bars of Funk Groove, 1 Bar Fill
• Paradiddle, Double Paradiddle, Paradiddle-Diddle
• 5, 6, 8 stroke rolls o Reading:
• Read example IB, IIA from New Breed by Gary Chester
On snare drum only
With Bass Drum, over 8ths on the high hat
• Read Syncopation Solo #1 from Ted Reed with swing 8ths over Jazz Ride, High Hat on 2
& 4
