Child Development is a term long class that is designed for students pursuing a career working with infants or
children of any age. In this class, we study physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development.
The Teacher Cadet class is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in or related to education. It
is a semester long class. Students in this class will:
 explore current issues in education,
 gain an understanding of how schools are funded and organized
 research college education programs, and
 gain hands on experience working with Lake Orion students and staff members.
Both Fresh Start Cadet and Exploring Special Education in Today’s Schools (SETS) are semester long
block classes. They are both structured in the following format – half of each block will be spent learning our
curriculum and the other half will be spent assisting other LOHS students. The focus for each class is as
follows:
 Fresh Start Cadet – studying teaching strategies, planning and executing activities and lessons, and
at-risk behaviors while helping general education freshmen successfully transition into high school.
 SETS - studying special education, its intricacies, and the various types of learning disabilities while
assisting in special needs classes at LOHS.
In Teaching Field Experience (currently called Face to Face), a term long class, students will spend time four
out of five class periods each week in Lake Orion elementary and middle schools working with teachers and
students, applying what they have learned and observed during their time in Teacher Cadet.
LOHS FEA
Future Educators of America (FEA) is an international student organization
dedicated to supporting young people interested in education-related
careers. FEA helps its members develop essential skills that will lead to
becoming highly trained and qualified teachers.
The FEA National Conference is in Washington D.C. in April 2015. We plan to bring a small group of students.
It’s an amazing learning and networking opportunity that is available to all LOHS FEA members.
In February of 2014, six LOHS FEA members traveled to San Antonio to attend the
Texas Association of Future Educators conference. They were able to a variety of
sessions, designed for high school students interested in teaching, including sessions on
reading strategies, empowering yourself, and the impact wonderful teachers have on their
students.
In May of 2013 four LOHS FEA members traveled to Orlando to go to the FEA National
Conference. Liz Dow competed at this conference; she wrote and delivered an impassioned piece on the
freedom of speech in public schools; she received 3rd place for her speech! Three other LOHS students
attended sessions there which centered around leadership and teaching. It was a great experience.
LOHS FEA meetings are held on Wednesdays before school in room 257 (Ms. Barnes’s room).
See http://futureeducators.org/ for more information about national FEA.
