List 5 things from Friday’s circle map (example: distance from your house to school) 2. What units would you use to measure each of the above items? Materials: -Planner -IAN -Pencil/Pen How do YOU measure things? What UNITS do you use to measure? The International System • Abbreviated “SI” from the French phrase: Le Système international d'unités • It is the world's most widely used system of measurement. • AKA the Metric System! Prefix vs. Suffix • The suffix is the root word • It always comes after the prefix. • Example: multivitamin – “multi” is the prefix and “vitamin” is the suffix • Prefixes by themselves don’t mean anything. – Example, the prefix “Un” means nothing….. Added to unhappy means not happy. These are the Suffixes…. Metric System Length Mass Volume Meters (m) Grams (g) Liters (L) Metric Prefixes • • • • • • • Kilo (k) – largest Hecto (h) Deca (da) BASIC UNIT!! How do I remember the order?? OR… • • • • • • • Kids Have Damaged 3 Different Colorful Millipedes Why do we have specific prefixes for each type of measurement… Length A big measurement Km A small one mm Same scenario works for volume and mass • Volume – what units (prefix + suffix) would you use to measure the volume of this?_______ • Mass - what units (prefix + suffix) would you use to measure the mass of this?_________ Quick Quiz What units (prefix + suffix) would you use to measure…. 1. • • • • • • • Kilo (k) – largest Hecto (h) Deca (da) BASIC UNIT!! A. 1 mile or 1 kilometer B. 1 yard or 1 meter 1 mile 1.6 kilometers C. 1 inch or 1 centimeter 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters 1 yard = 0.9444 meters Left Image: http://webapps.lsa.umich.edu/physics/demolab/controls/imagedemosm.aspx?picid=1167 Right Image: http://share.lancealan.com/N800%20ruler.jpg Metric Units The basic unit of length in the metric system is the meter and is represented by a lowercase m. Metric Units 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters (cm) 1 Meter = 1000 Millimeters (mm) Measuring Length How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters 2.8 What is the length of the line in centimeters? _______cm 28 What is the length of the line in millimeters? _______mm • You have been hired on by the esteemed company MAMMA. • Your job is to accurately measure and weigh anything and everything in front of you! • If you are able to complete the following tasks you will be promoted to a biologist (which is a necessity to continue further in Mrs. Walker’s class!!) Three parts: 1. Length 2. Mass 3. Volume Good luck and happy measuring! BELLWORK 8/25/15 Materials: -Planner -IAN -Pencil/Pen 1. What is the basic unit for length? Meter 2. What is the basic unit for mass? Gram 3. What is the basic unit for volume? Liter 4. Is a decameter larger or smaller than a decimeter? Larger! Add to your Table of Contents: • Length Lab • Mass Lab • Volume Lab Lesson 2: Mass English vs. Metric Units Which is larger? 1. 1 Pound or 100 Grams 1 pound = 453.6 grams 2. 1 Kilogram or 1 Pound 3. 1 Ounce or 1000 Milligrams 1 ounce of gold = 28,349.5 milligrams 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds Metric Units Mass refers to the amount of matter in an object. The base unit of mass in the metric system is the gram and is represented by g. Metric Units 1 Kilogram (kg) = 1000 Grams (g) 1 Gram (g) = 1000 Milligrams (mg) BELLWORK 8/25/15 1. What is the length of the blue line in millimeters? 35 mm 2. What is the length of the blue line in meters? 0.035 3. What is the length of the blue line in centimeters? 3.5cm 4. What is the width of your desk in centimeters? 60cm Materials: -Planner -IAN -Pencil/Pen Measuring Mass We will be using triple-beam balances to find the mass of various objects. The objects are placed on the scale and then you move the weights on the beams until you get the lines on the right-side of the scale to match up. Once you have balanced the scale, you add up the amounts on each beam to find the total mass. What would be the mass of the object measured in the picture? 70g 300g + _______ 373.35 g 3.35g = ________ _______ + ______ BELLWORK 8/27/15 Materials: -Planner -IAN -Pencil/Pen 1.What is the name of the scientific instrument you use to measure mass? You use a Triple Bean Balance to take mass of an object. 2. What is the first thing you do when you are taking the mass of an object? Make sure the TBB is balanced before you take the mass of an object. Lesson 3: Volume English vs. Metric Units Which is larger? 1 fl oz = 29.573 ml A. 1 liter or 1 gallon 1 12-oz can of soda would equal approximately 355 ml. B. 1 liter or 1 quart C. 1 milliliter or 1 fluid ounce 1 quart = 0.946 liters 1 gallon = 3.79 liters It would take approximately 3 ¾ 1-liter bottles to equal a gallon. Metric Units Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. The base unit of volume in the metric system is the liter and is represented by L. Metric Units 1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL) Measuring Volume We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. 43 What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL What causes the meniscus? A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides. Measuring Liquid Volume What is the volume of water in each cylinder? 37mL 52mL 23mL Pay attention to the scales for each cylinder. Practice A. 67 mL B. 32 mL C. 84.5 mL D. 45 mL E. 2.4 mL Draw F. 65 mL G. 31.5 mL H. 79.5 mL I. 48 mL J. 7 mL BELLWORK 8/31/15 1. What scientific instrument do we use to measure volume? A graduated cylinder is used to measure volume. 2. What do you look at to determine the volume of water? You read the volume at the bottom of the meniscus.
