Through his thoughts intertwined with the suspenseful storyline, one can tell that Santiago is an intelligent character who is an independent problem solver. This can be evidenced by his encounter with the old woman. Throughout the course of consultation, Santiago is reflective and analytical of all his observations. For example, just by listening to the prayer recited by the old woman, Santiago was able to infer that she was a gypsy, which incited fear within him. They become passionately devoted to a cause – particularly if they are championing for friends or family. The shopkeeper gives Santiago a job in Tangiers after he has been robbed. Santiago takes the job at the crystal shop and learns much about the shopkeeper's attitude toward life and the importance of dreaming. The shopkeeper, while generally afraid to take risks, is a very kind man and understands Santiago's quest - sometimes more than Santiago himself. This is the case when the shopkeeper tells Santiago that he will not return to Spain, since it it is not his fate. When Santiago approached the shopkeeper for food, it is evident that he was unselfish, though influenced by his religion, and offered food and work for Santiago. He is also unassuming, as he rejects the idea of change in his shop, but gullible, as easily convinced by Santiago. His determination is also evident for having stayed in the business for 20 years despite disappointing earnings. Last of all, through his helpful, honest and trustworthy character, he is able to make friends swiftly. One such case is Santiago who was so attached to him that departing draw tears.
