Events that are immediate, recent.
If something is happening NOW, it has more impact
than something that happened last week.
This is usually the most important news element.
Example: A snowstorm shutting down most of the town
would be important when it happens.
“Everything will be less interesting tomorrow than today”

residents.
Roadway
construction
during
homecoming
week.
Scientific
breakthrough.



Events that are likely to affect many
people.
The bigger the event, the bigger the
story.
Major consequences = major news
Prominence
Example: If
the student

is involved in a
rescue
operation, it is
interesting just
because of
who it is.



Events involving well-known people
or institutions.
How well-known are the
people/places in your story?
Powerful people are more
important than ordinary people.

Provides a forum for discussion and

The Unusual

Events that deviate sharply from the
expected, departing considerably
from the experiences of everyday
life.
If something is unusual, the oddity
alone can make it newsworthy.
Readers want to know how/why it
