Launched in 2009, Hunger Free Colorado (HFC) has emerged as the leading statewide anti-hunger advocacy organization. HFC works to provide systems change from the federal to the local level by using the tools of policy, coalition building, collaborative programming, targeted awareness and process measurements to create innovative solutions to Colorado’s hunger challenges.

In a further effort to meet these challenges, HFC’s Food Assistance Program Department has launched several initiatives including the Denver Department of Human Services (DDHS) Partnership, Food

Assistance Outreach, Community Based Organization’s (CBO’s) Train the Trainer, and the Hunger Free

Hotline (HFH).

Job Summary

The Food Assistance VISTA implements the strategic plan set forth by Hunger Free Colorado to increase participation in the Food Assistance (Food Stamp) Program. There is a focus on the senior adult population and increasing SNAP participation within that specific group. The VISTA is also responsible for forming and maintaining local and state partnerships across the Colorado. Specific duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

Identify community partners to carry out food stamp application assistance

Create an evaluation and on-going follow up system with the application assistance sites

Conduct “train the trainer” sessions

Create an evaluation and tracking system for the train the trainer participating sites

Utilize the PEAK online application system and its accompanying materials

Develop a post-training strategy support plan to follow up and evaluation

Utilize problem solving skills to overcome organizational barriers discovered from evaluation process

Create webinars, online toolkits, video editing for the train the trainer program

Continue support to the volunteer training program for HFC volunteers to assist in providing application assistance to the community, train the trainer sessions, Human Service volunteer program and many other food assistance related programs.

Skills and Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required

Experience providing training, tutoring or mentoring

Experience working with community based organizations and/or faith communities

Experience working with state and local government officials or programs

Experience with advocacy a plus

Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships

Ability to successfully and positively negotiate with others

Coalition building experience strongly desired

Excellent written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills

Experience developing and executing persuasive presentations

Good organizational skills, motivation, and the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines

Willingness to take initiative and work independently and as part of a team

Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds

Ability to work in a flexible and constantly changing work environment, and to deal effectively with shifting roles, responsibilities and expectations

Ability to think and problem-solve independently

Ability to develop, manage and execute projects

Background in hunger and poverty strongly desired

Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products including but not limited to Word, Excel, and

PowerPoint

Spanish speaking preferred

Must have a valid driver's license, a reliable vehicle and must be willing to travel throughout the state

Work Environment

Ability to work in a variety of office and community settings

Travel across Colorado required

Some early and late and hours may be necessary; occasional weekend hours

Physical Ability

Mobility in a variety of office, meetings and event settings

Ability to lift 25 pounds

Choice to volunteer/train prior to employment, which is highly recommended.

Term of Service: 03/18/2013 - 03/17/2014

Duration: Twelve months full-time

Financial Compensation: Monthly living stipend paid through AmeriCorps VISTA program; complete health care coverage and childcare payments (if you have a dependent child); relocation assistance if needed (if you move to Denver for the position, paid by AmeriCorps).

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive their choice of an educational award or an end of service cash award through the AmeriCorps VISTA program.
