Where do you see yourself in two
years as a Sophomore?
What about your Junior year??
Senior year???
It all depends on the
FRESHMAN year
Project Lead The Way is the nation's leading
provider of science, technology, engineering, and
math (STEM) programs. Through world-class K-12
curriculum, high-quality teacher professional
development, and outstanding partnerships,
PLTW is helping students develop the skills
needed to succeed in the global economy.
Designed for 9th grade students
interested in pursing a career in the
field of math, science or engineering
design.
According to a survey of PLTW students at the end of their
senior year, 70% indicated that they intend to study
engineering, technology, computer science, or another applied
science, and 93% intend to pursue at least a two-year or fouryear degree after high school.
True Outcomes Analysis of End-of-Course Evaluations for PLTW, 2009.
During the first year of implementation, PLTW schools are
required to offer at least one of the foundation courses and
ultimately implement both foundation courses and one or
more of the five specialization courses and/or capstone
course.
These courses complement traditional mathematics and
science courses and can serve as the foundation for STEMcentered or specialized academies. The program is
designed to prepare students to pursue a post-secondary
education and careers in STEM-related fields.
Foundation Course
Introduction to Engineering Design (IED)
9th Grade
The major focus of IED is the design process and its
application. Through hands-on projects, students apply
engineering standards and document their work. Students
use industry standard 3D modeling software to help them
design solutions to solve proposed problems, document
their work using an engineer’s notebook, and communicate
solutions to peers and members of the professional
community.
Following the Foundation Course (IED)
Principles Of Engineering
10th Grade
Through problems that engage and challenge, students
explore a broad range of engineering topics including
mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials,
and automation. Students develop skills in problem
solving, research, and design while learning strategies
for design process documentation, collaboration, and
presentation.
Specialization Courses
Beyond 10th Grade
*Aerospace Engineering
New! Biological Engineering
*BioE will replace Biotechnical Engineering (BE), which PLTW will continue to offer until the
end of the 2016-17 school year.
*Civil Engineering and Architecture
*Computer Integrated Manufacturing
*Digital Electronics
*Engineering Design and Development
* Based on availability

The career programs at Jefferson College Area Technical
School (ATS) help students begin preparation for a great
career while still in high school.
Classes are split into morning and afternoon sections,
each session consisting of a two hour block.
Morning classes meet daily beginning at 9 a.m. and
continue until 11 a.m. Afternoon classes begin at 12 p.m.
and continue until 2 p.m.
Students are accepted to the Area Technical School based on
a number of objective criteria that have been established by
each instructor. These criteria are based on critical academic
or course preparation pre-requisites that have proven to be
the foundation necessary for a student to experience success
in the program.
These criteria include grade point average,
attendance, course preparation, and prior ATS
program completion.
