Know the course and the instructor’s policy on late work, citation practices, shared work, testing procedures, and attendance for your course. Explore ways of discouraging academic dishonesty Pedagogy not Policing If you suspect a violation, it is strongly recommended that you discuss your concerns with the student. The instructor of record is required to report a violation to the Academic Integrity Coordinator of the college within five days of deciding if the suspected behavior was a violation of the policy. For this reason, report the incident to the instructor immediately. The consequences for violations in your classes are up the instructor of record if you are a teaching assistant.” Syracuse University fully complies with the Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and with procedures recommended by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. This legislation gives students the following rights with respect to their education records: Individual Responsibility I. The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the University receives a request for access. II. The right to request the amendment of the student's education records that the student believes are inaccurate or misleading. III. The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student's education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. Specific exceptions include: IV. The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by Syracuse University to comply with the requirements of FERPA. V. The right to prevent disclosure of any and all types of personally identifiable information that Syracuse University has designated as "Directory Information." Faculty and staff (TAs) are prohibited from sharing a student’s private and academic information without written consent from the student. This includes withholding information from parents and other students. In order to preserve the privacy of students, TAs should avoid emailing grades to students, particularly if the student is using a non-SU email account. TAs should also avoid using public areas or “boxes” to collect and return student materials. TAs should also avoid publicly displaying student grades. If this practice is done, TAs should not use any identifying information that could be traced back to the student. Syracuse University recognizes the diverse faith traditions represented among its campus community and supports the rights of faculty, staff, and students to observe according to these traditions. All University offices are asked to be sensitive to the needs of faculty, staff, and students who are observing a religious holiday when scheduling meetings and events. Faculty are asked to make appropriate accommodation for students' observance needs by providing an opportunity to make up any examination, study, or work requirement that is missed because of an absence due to a religious observance, provided the instructor has been notified no later than the end of the second week of classes.
