COMPUTER ACCESS

It is highly recommended that you have regular (daily) computer access, preferably a home computer with broadband Internet access. This course can be completed using public computers at TCC or other public access areas. However, be aware that using public computers may create a hardship. All course requirements remain the same whether your computer access is public or private (home).

TECHNICAL SKILL REQUIREMENTS

You should be comfortable with the following:

 using a word processor (changing font, spell check)

 using email for communication

 sending an email attachment

 navigating the Internet

 using an Internet search engine

 installing software on your computer

ATTENDANCE – TIME COMMITMENT- STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Attendance (regular participation in the online classroom) is essential for maintaining the best learning environment.

You will be expected to log on to the course site 2-3 times per week.

You are also expected to participate in all assigned activities in the course.

 Attendance is measured by completion of course assignments.

ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWAL FOR NON-PARTICIPATION

Students who fail to complete graded assignments during the first week or fail to complete the first essay by the due date may be Administratively Withdrawn from the course.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is totally online. Strategies include reading resources (textbooks); handouts; written assignments; and use of the discussion board, Internet, and email. Students are responsible for all concepts in assigned work.

EVALUATION TECHNIQUES

Your grade in this course will reflect the quality of the college level writing you produce – not

your effort. While extra effort is admirable, you will be successful throughout the remainder of your college experience only if you are able to produce college level writing.

The Blackboard grade book keeps a Running Score in your Grade Average row. This is the first column in your grade book. This score looks at the assignments you have completed to date and uses the points to give you your "current grade" in the class.

Essays, class discussions, and peer reviews will be evaluated using rubrics. Assessment rubrics are found in the Syllabus and Other Info section of the Blackboard class site.

SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES/ASSIGNMENTS

The instructor may change the assignment schedule AT ANY TIME with notification by email or posted in the Announcement section of the Blackboard class site.

 Assignments should be completed in the order in which they appear, as concepts build upon each other.

Students are expected to comply with assignment due dates which can be found in the

Schedule/ Assignments section for the course. All assignments, unless otherwise specified, are due by 8:00 a.m. CST on Friday at the end of the week listed in the Schedule of

Assignments. Please print this document and use it to guide your progress through the course.

SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS

Assignments are to be submitted though the assignment item in its module section in the Blackboard class site. Do not type your work in the text box, but attach it as a

WORD document. If you are unsure of this procedure, please visit the Blackboard tutorial under the Student Resources section on Blackboard

Students should also keep an electronic copy of all assignments submitted on their personal computer until the end of the semester.

Essays will be submitted for originality checks (plagiarism detection). TCC uses a plagiarism detection system called SafeAssign.

Please do not wait until the last minute to submit assignments.

You are submitting items over the Internet. There are many things that can go wrong in the path between your computer and the Blackboard course site. Your personal computer/Internet Service Provider issues are not

acceptable explanations of late work.

I do not accept late work. However, all essays must be completed according to instructions in order to earn a passing grade in the class.

I will only accept assignments by email ( pam.kannady@tulsacc.edu

) during emergency situations when connection problems are the result of equipment or Internet failure at TCC. In addition, if

TCC problems create a significant hardship to the submission of your assignment by the due date, I will adjust the due date. This information will be relayed by email and through an announcement.

Assignment Format

Assignments will follow standard MLA-style formatting guidelines (p. 714-716 of The Little,

Brown Handbook) including:

 a standard heading on the first page of the assignment (upper left margin, double-spaced)

Suzie Smith (Student Name)

Professor Pam Kannady (Instructor)

ENG 1213, Section ### (Course, Section#)

15 Oct. 2014 (Date due)

MLA mini-heading [last name page#] on each page (upper right header)

 standard 1" margins

 double-spaced (Please do not double space by pressing the enter key.)

 paragraph indentation of ½"

 size 12 font, Times New Roman, black text

A technical tips handout is available in the Course Information section of Blackboard to help with technical issues surrounding the required document formatting.

GRADED ASSIGNMENTS – RETURNED

Student assignments submitted by the stated due date will be graded and returned as soon as possible.

Your corrected (graded) assignments with comments about the quality of your work can be accessed through the Student Grade book. Click on the comments link and the attached file to see my comments on your returned Word document . Please make sure that you read these comments! There are documents to guide you in the Syllabus and Other Info area of the BB class menu.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY – PLAGIARISM

The cornerstone for intellectual achievement is academic integrity. Tulsa Community College recognizes that academic honesty is the vital key to a student’s true intellectual growth and ultimate personal satisfaction and success.

Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not tolerated within the Tulsa Community College system. Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another.

Plagiarism is a specific type of academic dishonesty. It is claiming, indicating, or implying that the ideas, sentences, or words of another are your own; it includes having another person do work claimed to be your own, copying the work of another and presenting it as your own, or

following the work of another as a guide to ideas and expressions that are then presented as your own.

Cases of academic dishonesty in this course will result in the following disciplinary action:

 in cases of deliberate plagiarism, the student will receive a zero (0%)

 the student may be asked to complete future essay assignments in a proctored setting

 a second occurrence of academic dishonesty will result in a grade of “F” for the semester

The complete Tulsa Community College Statement on Academic Integrity can be found in the

Course Information section of the Blackboard course site.

COMMUNICATING WITH THE INSTRUCTOR

This course will primarily utilize two methods of whole class communication.

 Each Sunday/Monday, weekly overview emails will be sent to all students.

During the week, announcements will be placed in the Announcement section of the

Blackboard course site highlighting certain aspects of assignments or alerting students to important issues.

Email is the preferred method of individual communication. Please allow for a 24-hour response time (may be up to 48 hours on the weekend).

CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE

Students are expected to display tolerance for others’ views on Discussion Board forums and

Peer Editing assignments. They are also to refrain from the use of any inappropriate language.

Open and mutually respectful communication of varied opinions, beliefs, and perspectives during online discussion encourages the free exchange of ideas that is essential to higher learning and to the ability to learn from each other. The instructor reserves the right to terminate any discussion where these guidelines are violated.

REGULARLY SCHEDULED Bb MAINTENANCE

Regular server maintenance is scheduled every Wednesday morning from 12:15 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. Blackboard may be inaccessible for all or part of this time. Please plan accordingly.

INSTITUTIONAL STATEMENT

Each student is responsible for being aware of the information contained in the TCC Catalog, TCC

Student Handbook, Student Code of Conduct Policy Handbook, and semester information listed in the class schedule. All information may be viewed on the TCC website: www.tulsacc.edu

.

COURSE WITHDRAWAL

Students who are earning a failing grade should consider withdrawing from the course by the official drop date.

 The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class.

Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus or log onto TED to initiate withdrawal from a course (“W” grade) or to change from Credit to Audit.

 Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines.

 Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw will receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student. Students who stop participating in class, or who are not making satisfactory progress, and do not withdraw may be dropped from the class which will result in an “AW” on the transcript and their financial aid may suffer as a result. Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course or to change from Credit to Audit. Withdrawing from a course, or changing to audit, after the drop/add period may alter the financial aid award for the current semester and future semesters. Students may receive an outstanding bill from TCC if the recalculation leaves a balance due to TCC.

 The last day to withdraw from this course is Friday, Nov. 21, 2014.
