Glossary Exercise Complete the table below. Do not just explain what these mean but also explain why they are used in industry. Use examples to help explain your findings. 1.Understand the features of single camera production Formats: Series / Series What does term mean? A series is the opposite of single drama due to having many episodes broadcasted whether it’s everyday or weekly. Why used in Industry? Series are used within the industry to tell a story over a period of time. Single drama A programme, which only has one episode, broadcasted once. Genre, eg period, dramadoc, crime, soap opera, comedy A kind/sort/form of something, whether it’s a film music or writing Usually to give an insight into an issue or topic which has happened Is used within the industry to give structure to the different sorts and also to be able to follow codes and conventions to have the film/programme fall into the specific genre Narrative structures: Linear (or sequential), Non-linear (or non-sequential), Flashback Endings, eg open, closed What does term mean? A straight forward story – beginning – middle – end Usually aren’t left on a cliffhanging sort of ending A story which doesn’t exactly start at the beginning but could start at the middle or even the end and then make its way explaining for happened or show the future of the present end/middle A flashback is a scene within a film or part which is from the past but being shown in the present usually through a characters thought path Endings are the end of the episode/film or story An open ending is one that is somewhat leaving a sequel or more to come, where a closed ending is understandable and doesn’t leave the door open for more Take a short ( one min sequence of a film/tv text of your choice)Technical Evaluation Use of Camera in Single Camera How has the choice of shot effected how an audience respond to the sequence Why used by Industry? To tell a story in an understandable manner with a obvious beginning to end These are used within the industry to add more oomph to the story, dragging you in a little more as you’d of jumped straight into the heart of the story Use in the industry usually to add more to the backing of a story/what is happening within the film/programme To bring an end to specific main or secondary stories within series/the ending of a film Examples Soap operas for example are very long series which go on for decades – Eastenders Shorter series such as ‘Top Boy” are only broadcasted for brief periods of times such as a week - month ‘Murder’ from BBC Two Genre examples: Comedy – being funny/humorous Horror – Being scary/gory Examples Most Disney films could be example of a linear structure as they are fairy tales which are straight forward in the structure Sin City Kill Bill Pulp Fiction X-Men – Origins, Wolverine has multiple flashbacks through his dreams showing his past Open – The twilight Saga had open endings within all their films giving off that there’s more to come Closed – Shaft (2000) gives a clear ending to the film leaving the door closed without expecting more Training Day Ending - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwnP7jhTrlQ The use of the camera within the first minute has the audience responding in quite a anticipating way. This is due to having an over the shoulder shot of Jake holding the gun towards Alonzo, with this shot we’d expect him to most likely shoot but even without that being the outcome there is still a sense of anticipation. The scene has been edited in quite a up close and personal sort of way, trying to heighten the anticipating feeling, encouraging them to be more on the edge of their seat not missing any of the importance through the close ups/extreme close ups. The use of camera in a single camera production definitely effects how the audience responds as with each shot type it gives the audience another perspective, whether that’s from one of the characters view in 1st person or from a bystander in 3rd person. Use of Lighting in Single Camera How has the use of lighting effected how an audience read the sequence The lighting plays a big part within the story so with the fact that it is perceived as being night time it adds emphasis to the audience’s reading of the sequence as they know time is running out. The lighting also sets a dark mood as it is dark outside and the specific things, which are lit play a important part within it all. There is high key lighting within this production; purpose being for lighting the scene in front specifically rather than having ambient light to enhanced the whole scene including the background. Lighting within single camera are quite important due to the fact that lighting can set a mood to the scene giving a enhanced feeling of fear within horrors for example. Consider Sound Process in Single Camera. What elements have been included to enhance the viewing experience There would be quite a bit of reverb within this scene also the way in which the voices much be propelled in certain ways. The reverb is used to give the effect that the area that the scene is in is quite a open space, with gaps for the echo to get captured in and Reverb would be included quite a bit for single camera, as it is quite a basic effect for sound editing which can have a big impact on how the sound is perceived. Consider Editing Process in Single Camera. Discuss how the scene has been edited to encourage the way a viewer may interpret the activity. The process of the editing was quite slow to medium pace at the beginning, cutting every so often rather than at a fast pace. This was due to establishing what is happening within the scene and how the characters are feeling. The slow to medium change in pace of the clip editing would also affects the way the viewer interprets the scene as they’ll see that as the clips are getting ever so faster, the action or build up to action is following the same pace, getting them on the edge of their seat through both the editing and visuals. Consider Scripting Process in Single Camera. How has dialogue given us important narrative and character info. Consider Casting, Has the right person got the job? Could you think of other actors who could be better suited to the roles? The pace of the editing does increase as drama does begin to kick off a bit more, emotions heightening so it is shown through how much faster the shots are being cut and changed around, from less close ups to more wide shots to capture more of what is happening and the other characters reactions together. Dialogue has given important narrative and character info as through the speech we find out that they have previous knowledge on certain things, just through certain things they say or share within dialogue, whether its verbally or thought. I personally think for Training Day the right people were casted for the role, as not only did their acting live up to the characters bio but their image (facially) and body language showed a perfect interpretation of the character, mainly Alonzo being played by Denzel Washington. I think another actor that would have been able to play the lead of Alonzo Harris so well would be Terrence Howard. This is because in past films and series he has played the double-crossing antagonist. Another would be Wesley Snipes; this is because he has that antagonist look to him. He has also played quite a few antagonists in past production and even when playing the protagonist in his trilogy ‘Blade’ he still somewhat came out as a antagonist through his image and actions.
