Proofreading with partners!
(Cooperative groups)
Grade 5 Language Arts/Reading
May 1, 2012
Time frame of lesson
45 minutes 12:45pm-1:30pm
Purpose of Lesson
I am teaching this lesson to demonstrate how to proofread a paper. Understanding the basic symbols of editing and becoming proficient at
proofreading will be useful in all subject areas and in all grades, including in the workplace! This lesson falls nicely within the research paper
unit in which the students are required to research a topic and write a paper.
Learning Objective(s)
TSWBAT:
revise writing errors by making the necessary corrections.
Connection to Illinois State Standards
US-CC-ELA2010.5.W.5
With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop
and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising,
editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. (Editing for
conventions should demonstrate command of Language
standards 1–3 up to and including grade 5.)

Instructional Sequence
Before beginning the lesson, write the sentences for the game on the white boards ( to prepare ahead), and tape paper over them
to conceal them until the game begins.
Introduction: (5 minutes)
Ask: Do you remember last week when we were taking the vocabulary quiz
I gave you? One of the students said that she would like to use a word for
one of the answers, but when she filled the word in the blank, it didn't make
sense. In the word bank, I had listed the plural form of the word, yet the
sentence required the singular form. ("A part of the earth's surface that has
a unique shape, is easy to recognize, and was created by nature is known as
a LANDFORMS.") This is because I did not do a good enough job
proofreading or editing the test I created for you!
Detailed Instructional Procedures: (35 Minutes)
LINKING STATEMENT: Today we will be learning some common proofreading marks to help you when you proofread and correct
your research papers!
We are going to start with a few of the basic proofreading marks that help writers go back and fix their mistakes!

Hand out the proofreading bookmarks
Small group team work within large group instruction (15 minutes)


Begin the slide presentation by viewing the silly errors and and by
incorporating discussion on why the students think editing or
proofreading their work is important. Demonstrate each one of the 14
Proofreading Marks on slide #2. Point to one of the marks, and ask
the students to locate its meaning on the bookmark. Ask them to
suggest what needs to be changed according to the proofreading
marks.
Go through the rest of the slides, having the students find the errors in
each. Students should quietly discuss in their groups the error in each
slide and mark them on their worksheets. Then, draw a table number
out of a hat and call on that table for their 'error answer' and their idea
of which proofreading mark to use to correct it. (They can refer to
their bookmarks and their worksheets.)
Large group play, with individual contributions (20 minutes)



Play the Proofreading Relay game! Review the directions on the last
slide with them before beginning.
If staffing allows, put one adult at each of the three stations to guide
the students.
If time allows then play three rounds of the game.
Closure: (5 minutes)
Ask: Who can tell me why proofreading is important?
Ask: If you practice proofreading, how can it help you in the future?
Say: Draw with your finger in the air the proofreading mark for capitalizing
a letter; spelling corrections, insert a word, add a period.
Say: I am leaving you with an exit slip to practice proofreading. Please
finish it and I will collect it the next time we meet.
Assessment Tools or Strategies
The students will receive a pretest to determine prior knowledge on the topic.
1. Objective 1 is formatively assessed during the direct instruction portion of the lesson when I hear the responses given by the students
regarding which proofreading mark they use and how they edit the mistakes in the text. I will also formatively assess the students as I
circulate the room during the Proofreading Relay game. In addition, I will also be able to assess their understanding based on
their responses written on their exit slips.
Adaptations/Accommodations
I will incorporate a slide presentation with pictures to help connect the material for visual learners. I will incorporate an movement to appeal
to the kinesthetic learners. The Relay game is also helpful to auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners as they will all work independently, yet
as a team to complete the task.
