Freedom is the power, rooted in reason and
will, to act or not to act, to do this or that, and
so to perform deliberate actions on one’s own
responsibility.
Having freedom means that we are
responsible for our actions. Every
action we choose, further,
determines our character.

decision inevitably results from something
independent of the human will.

External Freedom includes
freedom from factors outside
ourselves that threaten or
destroy our power to exercise
choice.
Internal Freedom includes
freedom from interior factors
that limit choice.

Limits to Freedom
The modern world often defines “freedom” as “doing
whatever one wants”.
This kind of “freedom” is more precisely defined as “license”
(text) or “freedom of indifference” (Servais-Théodore
Pinckaerswas a noted moral theologian, especially influential in
the renewal of a theological and Christological approach to
Christian virtue ethics.).
“True freedom elevates humans; it never demeans.”
“This mentality has created such an
emphasis on the freedom of choice that the
fundamental right to life itself of innocent
human beings has been assaulted and
denied. It is a gross distortion of the
exercise of freedom to attack other human
beings and the values God’s law seeks to
protect…”
True freedom is not license. License is
unbridled, excessive, undisciplined freedom
that abuses true liberty.
D’OH!
By deviating from the
moral law man violates
his own freedom,
becomes imprisoned
within himself, disrupts
neighborly fellowship,
and rebels against
divine truth.
True freedom liberates us to develop our
God-given talents in a responsible way
so we can live our lives for others and
for God.
True freedom serves what is
good, just and true.

Among the major impediments to the
exercise of true freedom are:
IGNORANCE: Simply not knowing what
we should do or not. We might not know
a rule…but we always have the to
overcome ignorance to the best of our
ability.
INADVERTANCE: Not paying attention
while we are acting.
DURESS: Someone tries to force us to
do something.

Among the major impediments to the
exercise of true freedom are:
INORDINATE ATTACHMENTS: Things
can enslave us so that we aren’t acting
with true freedom.
FEAR: or panic can stop us from truly
acting in freedom.
HABIT: Bad repeated behaviour are
vices- can limit people’s freedom.
Always remember we are free to change.

What impediments are present in the following
scenarios:
1) you are driving in Europe and you fail to stop
while making a left turn
2) 2) you forget to pick up your younger sister
after school
3) 3) you have a big test coming up; you do not
do your household chores for the day
4) 4) In order to get a good grade, you cheat on a
test
5) 5) You drive across private property because
you think someone is chasing you
6) You tease a classmate as you have been doing
since grade school
In other words, the world’s definition
of “freedom” isn’t really True
Freedom at all…It is simply the
license to make choices that will
eventually enslave us to our fallen
passions!
True Freedom pays attention to the
laws written in our nature and those
revealed by God. Making choices
that follow those laws, then, helps us
to live the life God wants us to live to
our fullest potential.
