The Supremes
The #1 song, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, took off in
the United States in January 1964, marking the
beginning of Beatlemania. The song was written
during the time when British groups were becoming
very popular. This included the Beatles, The
Monkees, and the Rolling Stones. It was written in
the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Since everyone
was in a fighting mood from the war, it helped bring
people closer together.
The chorus focused on two people holding onto one
another:
Yeah you, got that something
I think you'll understand
When I feel that something
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
The best-selling book, The Giving Tree, focuses on a
very large tree that loved a little boy. Every day the
boy would come to the tree to visit. He would also
eat her apples and swing from her branches. As the
boy grew older, he began to want more from the
tree. The tree gave him her limbs to build a home;
later, she gave him her trunk to build a boat. Finally,
the old man came back and the tree had nothing left
but the stump. The man used the stump to sit on
and rest, and the tree was happy. This book has
been popular with children and adults alike.
About The Author
Shel Silverstein was born in Chicago, Illinois, on
September 25, 1930. He studied music, and
established himself as a musician and composer,
writing songs including “A Boy Named Sue,” and
“One’s on the Way.” In 1950, Shel served in Korea
and Japan, becoming a cartoonist for Stars & Stripes
magazine where he started to really perfect his
talents. In 1963, Silverstein met Ursula Nordstrom,
who convinced him to begin writing material for
children. That was the beginning of a great career in
children’s literature. His most popular book was The
Giving Tree, which was published in 1964. Others
included “The Lion Who Shot Back” and “A Giraffe
and a Half”. After a great career, Shel Silverstein died
on May 10, 1999.
Lyndon B. Johnson
(Served as President
from 1963 to 1969)
Lyndon B. Johnson was born
on August 27, 1908, in
Stonewall, Texas. He was
surrounded by rural poverty
as he grew up, but was able to attend school at
Southwest Texas State Teachers College. During
World War II, he served in the Navy as a lieutenant
commander, winning a Silver Star in the South
Pacific. Johnson served in the U.S. House of
Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Johnson also
served as Vice-President under President John F.
Kennedy. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, made
Johnson the country’s 36th president. During
President Johnson’s term, we were in the middle of
the Vietnam War. He failed to lead our nation out of
the war. He did, however, launch a group of reforms
aimed at poverty, which was called the “Great
Society” since poverty was a big issue in 1964, as the
economy was not doing well. Many people liked
President Johnson because he focused on civil rights.
Also under Johnson, the country made spectacular
explorations of Space. When three astronauts
successfully orbited the moon in December 1968, he
said, "You've taken ... all of us, all over the world,
into a new era…" When he left office, peace talks
were underway. Johnson did not live to see the talks
succeed, as he died suddenly of a heart attack at his
Texas ranch on January 22, 1973.
The Fugitive
The first season of The Fugitive was in 1963. In
1964, it became one of the most watched shows on
television. The main characters are Dr. Richard
Kimble, Lt. Philip Gerard, and the one-armed man.
The genre includes action, mystery, and drama. The
Fugitive is about Dr. Richard Kimble, played by David
Janssen, who was wrongly convicted of murdering
his wife. The doctor escapes from prison and spends
a lot of time searching for the one-armed man who
did kill his wife. While he hunts for the true killer, he
is in turn, hunted by the police.
My opinion of the show The Fugitive is that it is a
great TV show because it has a bunch of suspense
that keeps you watching to see what will happen
next.
Cassius Clay
Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. was born on January 17,
1942, in Louisville, Kentucky. His father and mother,
Cassius Marcellus Clay, Sr. and Odessa O'Grady Clay,
raised him. He found his passion in boxing. After a
tiring match against Sonny Liston on February 17,
1964, Clay won the battle claiming his first-ever
heavyweight title in one of the biggest upsets in
boxing. In 1964, Clay converted to Islam and took
the name Muhammad Ali. He was drafted in 1966,
and refused to go to the military. Muhammad Ali
was stripped of his boxing title and was suspended
for three and a half years from boxing because of his
refusal to go to the military. He returned to the
boxing ring in 1970, and became heavyweight
champion in 1974. He retired from boxing in 1981,
after losing his boxing title. In 1984, Muhammad Ali
was diagnosed with Parkinson’s
disease. He is still living today at the
age of 71.
I was born to be great.
I am great, and I will be greater-the greatest.
