Year 3 Newsletter Spring 1 7th January 2016 Welcome back to the New Year. We hope that you have had a relaxing and enjoyable break and are looking forward to the term ahead. Topic Our new topic this half term is Treasures of Ancient Egypt, which is a very popular with the children. They have already been immersed in the topic by taking part in an Egyptian treasure hunt on Tuesday, in which they had to follow the clues to find the buried treasure. They then designed their own treasure hunt, using cryptic clues. This topic explores the civilisation of Ancient Egypt through the study of archaeology. Children learn about the discoveries of Howard Carter and investigate a wide range of artefacts, considering what each reveals about Egyptian society. Children explore the idea that ‘treasure’ means different things to different people, including natural resources, national collections and personal belongings. It looks at the ownership of treasure and its ‘value’. English The English areas this half term are Myths and Legends, Shape Poems and Adventure and Mystery Stories. We will be looking at Ancient Egyptian Myths and Legends and using them to create our class assemblies. After that we will be looking at shape poems and calligrams based on animals in the story ‘Pepi and the Secret Names’. Finally children will be using their imagination and knowledge of Ancient Egypt to write an exciting and gripping adventure mystery story. Reading Please continue to read at home with your child for at least 20 minutes every day, and to talk to them about their understanding of what they read. Your comments in the children’s Reading Records are very useful to us, so please continue to write in them on a regular basis. This does not have to be restricted to the books which we send home with the children but can include any other books which they choose to read as well. Maths Within maths this half term we will be working on a range of skills. We will be learning to multiply numbers by 10 and 100, subtract by finding sums and differences of multiples of 10 and 100, multiplication, measuring length, mass and capacity and money and measurement problems. Please ensure your child has a change of clothes (t-shirt, shorts or tracksuit trousers, socks and trainers/plimsolls) in their PE kit. Weather permitting, we will be having some PE sessions outside, so please ensure that the clothing is appropriate for this. The PE kit bag can stay on the children’s pegs and be taken home at the end of each half term. Inspire A further reminder about our class Inspire events which are happening this half term. 3SM’s will be on Tuesday 9th of February and 3OP’s will be on Thursday 11th February. This is always a popular morning and a chance for parents to come in to work with their child. Ours will be a really fun morning based on our Egyptian topic. Homework Homework will be sent out on Fridays and should be returned on Wednesdays in time for us to look at it and hand out the next piece. Homework will be an activity that consolidates the learning the children have been doing during the week in English, Maths or Topic, along with a weekly spelling challenge. We would appreciate your ongoing support with the homework tasks. British Museum Trip Letters will shortly be coming your way letting you know the details of the class trip this half term. We will be going to the British Museum on the 4th February to visit the Ancient Egypt section.
