1/6 DAILY CATALYST PG. 63 GENETIC VOCAB
• Answer the following question in 3-5 complete
sentences.
• Be sure to include KEY vocabulary and PROVE to me
you are AP Biology students (in case your forgot over the break)
• 1. Our civilization generates many potentially
mutagenic chemicals (pesticides, for example) and
modifies the environment in ways that increase
exposure to other mutagens, notably UV radiation.
What role should the government play in identifying
mutagens and regulating their release to the
environment?

1/7 DAILY CATALYST PG. 63 GENETIC VOCAB
1. A rather large population of Boreal Toads
have 239 pink-sided individuals and 647
purple-sided individuals. Assume that pink is
totally recessive. Please calculate the
following (2 pts. each):
• Recessive Genotype:
• Dominant Genotype:
• The expected genotype frequencies.
• The percentage of heterozygous individuals
that you would predict to be in this population.

REVIEW QUESTION #1
• Outline your response to the following question in your
notes. You may use bullet points. (5 minutes)
• The genetic code is rich with evolutionary implications.
For instance, notice that the 20 amino acids are not
randomly scattered; most amino acids are coded for by
a similar set of codons. What evolutionary explanations
can be given for this pattern? (hint: There is one
explanation relation to historical ancestry, and some less
obvious ones of a “forms-fits-functions” type)
• With a partner, form a response to this question in a
complete sentence(s). (10 minutes)
• Be ready to share out
• Partner 2
• Find someone who is interested in studying the
same subject as you in college. If you can’t find the
exact same subject, find someone close!
REVIEW QUESTION #2
• Draw your response to this answer in your notes with
your partner. Be ready to share out.
• A biologist inserts a gene from a human liver
cell into the chromosome of a bacterium.
The bacterium then transcribes and
translates this gene. The protein produced is
useless and is found to contain many more
amino acids than does the protein made by
eukaryotic cell. Explain why?
PG. 63 GENETIC VOCAB
• Our next unit is GENETICS! We will cover the cell
cycle, mitosis, meiosis, Punnett squares, genetic
diseases, and back to Chi-Squared!
• But first, we need to be experts on vocabulary.

PG. 64 CELL CYCLE
• The ability of organisms to reproduce their own kind
is the one characteristic that best distinguishes living
things from non living matter.
• Example?
• Viruses cannot replicate on their own! They need a host.
• Think back to Virchow (flip to notes)
• “Where a cell exists, there must have been a preexisting cell…”
• This is cell division
• Definition?
• The reproduction of cells
PG. 64 CELL CYCLE
Plants/Animals
• Cell division unites both unicellular and multicellular
organisms
• Sexual vs. asexual
Bacteria
• This is the cell cycle!
• Key Point #1: Cell Cycle
• The life of a cell from the time it is first formed from a dividing
parent cell to division into two cells.
• Passes on identical genetic information to daughter cells
• This must be regulated, if not= cancer
• Read page. 219 Concept 12.1
GENOMES
• Genomes?
• Eukaryotic DNA is 2 meters long!
• Before a cell can divide, al of the DNA
must be copied=
• Replication!
• Why?
• You do not give away your original! You keep it, and give
a copy away.
• Why is the statement above not 100% correct? (turn and
talk)
• That is a lot of DNA.
• How does all of the DNA fit into every cell?
• Packed into chromosomes
KEY POINT #2: HOW MANY
CHROMOSOMES
Somatic Cell
• All body cells
• 46 chromosomes
• 23 from each parent
Gametes
• Sex cells
• 23 chromosomes
CHROMOSOMES
• Draw and label in your notebook
CONCEPT CHECK 12.1
• Page 220 (Orange book)
• Complete the concept check 12.1 in your notes
with your partner.
KEY POINT #3: MITOSIS IS FOR GROWTH
AND REPAIR
MITOSIS
•Key Point #4: In mitosis, a
somatic cell creates an
exact copy of itself.
Body Cell
THE CELL CYCLE
INTERPHASE
•
•
•
•
Key Point #1:
Interphase consists of G1, S, and G2 phases.
90% of cell life
Centrosomes duplicates
G1
• Key Point #2:
• Intense cell growth
S
• Key Point #3:
• DNA is replicated
G2
• Key Point #4:
• Cell continues to grow and get ready for division
MITOTIC SPINDLE
• Centrosome: a non- membranous organelle
• (organization center for microtubules)
• Centrioles are located at the centrosome
• Not the most important job
• An aster forms to connect at the kinetochore
FINAL TEST CORRECTIONS
• Directions: Begin working on your final test
corrections. Test corrections are due Friday. All
sections can be corrected. Complete corrections
on a separate sheet of paper and staple this paper
to the back of your exam.
• What the right answer is, why you missed it, why is
that the right answer
• Time: Until the end of class
• Noise: 1 (with partner)
