AP BIOLOGY 2014-2015 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT Dear AP Biologist, I am glad you have enrolled in AP Biology! In order to “fit it all in” the content that is, you must complete this summer assignment as a review of water and chemistry concepts prior to the first day of class. You will be expected to know and apply concepts when the term begins. Your time spent learning before the start of class will allow us to have more time for the “fun” of biology and ensure you will be prepared for the AP exam in May. The textbook we will be using is CAMPBELL BIOLOGY 9TH EDITION. By Neil Campbell and Jane Reece ISBN# 978-0-321-55823-7 (A) The questions related to each chapter will help focus your reading to ensure that you are studying the pertinent topics. As you read, neatly answer the questions in the following format. Please come prepared for our first class meeting!! 1. You will need to purchase a composition note book for all notes in this class. Notes will be written in Cornell format. 2. Please write question on left and answer on right 3. You may only write on the right pages of notebook. 4. The left or back of pages will be for vocabulary and interactions for notes. 5. Skip a line between each question. 6. Define terms or create a diagram of each vocabulary term (B) Be aware that simply being able to answer all questions in the packet is insufficient to prepare the water and chemistry unit test. You are responsible for learning all information in these chapters and applying what you have learned. (C) Prepare a written response to the WATER FRQ prompt at the end of this packet. Please read tips on how to write an AP Biology FRQ especially if this is your first AP science course. The water and chemistry unit exam will address concepts in all 3 chapters, and will be administered the second week of school, after limited discussion of summer packet content. The course starts out fast, and the rapid pace continues until the AP exam in May. AP Biology is challenging, and requires a lot of time, but the study of biology is quite exciting and I think you will enjoy the course! I look forward to working with you. Kindest regards, Mrs. Piedras AP BIOLOGY 2014-2015 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT Chapter 1 note stems 1. List the 7 properties of life and give an example of each. 2. What are emergent properties? Give two examples 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Study figure 1.14 in your text. Which level contains the greatest diversity of organisms? Which level contains the least diversity of organisms? Write out levels in order. Create a mnemonic device to remember these levels. (Be creative and school appropriate. List the kingdoms that belong to the following domains. Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya What two points are articulated in Darwin’s The origin of species? What resulted from studying the finches? Define the following vocabulary ***Remember all vocabulary must be interactive ex. Foldable, flashcards… Biosphere Ecosystem Community Population Organism Organs Organ system Tissues Cells Organelles Molecules Eukaryotic cell Prokaryotic cell DNA Genes Genome Negative feedback loops Positive feedback loop Data Hypothesis Controlled experiment Theory AP BIOLOGY 2014-2015 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT AP Biology Chapter 2 Note stems This chapter is a review of basic chemistry – we will be going through this chapter very quickly. If you have any problems – please see me before school for additional help. 1. Contrast the term element with compound. 2. Label the diagram below and define the terms that you label. 3. Contrast the terms atomic mass and atomic number. 4. 5. 6. 7. What is the difference between the terms atomic mass and atomic weight? What is an isotope and what is “special” about radioactive isotopes? Explain how radioactive tracers are used in science? Explain how the movement of electrons relates to the concept of potential energy – use the diagram below to help answer the question. 8. What determines interactions between atoms? Why are valence electrons important? 9. What is the difference between a structural and molecular formula? 10. Compare and contrast hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions. 11. Based on the reading, what is an example, in a living system, of how molecular shape is critical? 12. Define a dynamic chemical equilibrium in terms of quantities of reactants and products. This is a critical concept! AP BIOLOGY 2014-2015 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT Vocabulary Define the following terms: a. Chemical bond b. Covalent bond c. Valence d. Electronegativity e. Nonpolar covalent bond f. Polar covalent bond g. Essential element h. Trace element i. Molecule j. Cation k. anion Chapter 3 Note stems This chapter is a review from your previous biology class – these concepts are critical and repeated throughout the year. If you have not covered this material previously or need additional assistance with the concepts please schedule time to see me. 1. Why is water considered a polar molecule? 2. For each of the below listed properties of water – briefly define the property and then explain how water’s polar nature and polar covalent bonds contribute to the water special property. Include an example in nature of each property also. a. Cohesion b. Adhesion c. Surface tension d. High specific heat e. Heat of vaporization f. Evaporative cooling 3. What is special about water and density? 4. Label the diagram below to demonstrate the dissociation of the water molecule and then relate this diagram to pH. AP BIOLOGY 2014-2015 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT 5. What defines an acid and a base? 6. Why are “apparently” small changes in pH so important in biology? 7. What is a buffer and write and explain the carbonic acid buffer system in human blood – yes we are back to the equation AGAIN! 8. What is acid precipitation and why is it important to living organisms? Vocabulary Define the following terms: a. Solute b. Solvent c. Aqueous solution d. Hydrophilic e. Hydrophobic f. Colloid g. Hydration shell h. Molarity AP BIOLOGY 2014-2015 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT Water is essential to all living things. (a) Discuss THREE properties of water. (b) Explain each of the following in terms of the properties of water. You are not limited to the three properties discussed in part (a): • The role of water as a medium for the metabolic processes of cells • The ability of water to moderate temperature within living organisms and in organisms’ environments • T\he movement of water from the roots to the leaves of plants _____________________________________________________________________________________
