Assessment Plan (how will you assess student progress?): - After a brief review and skill segment students will be asked to perform the drop-hit serve with a 75% success rate while having the ball land on the opposite side of the net diagonal from them and in side of the court. - After a brief review and skill segment students will be asked to perform the backhand/forehand groundstroke and volley with a 75% success rate while having the ball land on the opposite side of the net inside the court. - During games students will be able to show what good sportsmanship looks like, this will be determined on how they interact with their partners and opponents. Do they give good feedback, do they help their partner out on deciding whether or not to hit a ball, do they talk to their partners, and make sure they are not negative in any way. Personal objective(s) for the teacher: - Be more efficient when splitting students into groups - Continue to learn students names - Learn how to better interact and deal with kids who have a difficult time remembering what to do and who is in charge of the class Pre-requisite Skills: - Knowledge from previous class lectures and demonstrations along with practice of how to achieve the 4 basic strokes in tennis along with the drop-hit serve - Boundaries on the tennis court - General hand-eye coordination/ball striking skills Modifications / Adaptations: - 1 students has a broken wrist/arm on their dominant hand o Encourage them to keep using their non-dominant hand and to not give up o Have them do elbow planks instead of full extension planks or push-ups Resources/equipment: - 7 plastic paddles, 10 foam balls, 1 ball bucket, 10 poly spots, 3 tall cones, 2 long jump ropes Safety issues to consider - NLCA has a very slick floor so students will need to be wearing proper footwear to prevent sliding/slipping Time Lesson Segment - include skill cues where appropriate Activities/Task Applications - include extensions or simplifications if appropriate and instructions for drills, activity organization, LUG rules, etc. 3 Minutes Warm-up While the 9th graders are doing their pushups and sit-ups, the other four teachers will each be in one corner of the court encouraging the 10 th graders to jog around the court. 2 Minutes Forehand Volley Practice The teachers will pair up students, all students will be handed a paddle and at least 1 ball (2 if equipment allows). Each student will start off 2 steps back from the net, 1 partner will start off the Volley Rally with a drop-hit serve. If the students find that they can hit the ball at least 5 times each without the ball touching the ground, they will then take 3 steps back. If the students can accomplish this while touching the ball at least 5 times each they will then take 3 steps forwards and use their non-dominant hand. If this can be accomplished 4 times in a row they may then take 3 steps back a repeat the steps. 2 Minutes Forehand Groundstroke Practice The teachers will pair up students, all students will be handed a paddle and at least 1 ball (2 if equipment allows). Each student will start off 5 steps back from the net, 1 partner will start off the Groundstroke Rally with a drop-hit serve. Teachers will challenge the students to keep the ball in play using the forehand groundstroke only for 30 seconds. If they can accomplish this they will each take 2 more steps away from the net and then repeat the challenge of 30 seconds. Next the students will go to whatever distance is comfortable for them and rally for as long as they can. The final challenge will be for the students to each try and hit the ball 10 times before they lose control. 2 Minutes Backhand Volley Practice The teachers will pair up students, all students will be handed a paddle and at least 1 ball (2 if equipment allows). 2 Minutes Backhand Groundstroke Practice The teachers will pair up students, all students will be handed a paddle and at least 1 ball (2 if equipment allows). Each student will start off 5 steps back from the net, 1 partner will start off the Groundstroke Rally with a drop-hit serve. Teachers will challenge the students to keep the ball in play using the forehand groundstroke only for 30 seconds. If they can accomplish this they will each take 2 more steps away from the net and then repeat the challenge of DIAGRAMS 30 seconds. Next the students will go to whatever distance is comfortable for them and rally for as long as they can. The final challenge will be for the students to each try and hit the ball 10 times before they lose control. 1 Minute Review Cues and Steps for Forehand/Backhand Groundstroke/Volley Students will circle up around the net for a brief discussion of the cues and steps for the forehand/backhand groundstroke/volley. Each student will be asked to perform the steps so the teachers can make sure that students know what they are doing because later on in the lesson the students will be tested on their abilities to perform these tasks. 1 Minute Testing skills for Forehand Volley The teachers will pair up students, half of the students will be handed four balls and the other half will be handed a paddle. The half with the 4 balls will go to one side of the net and stand approximately 5 steps back from the net, the other pair will go to the opposite side of the net approximately 1 step back from the net. The partner with the 4 balls will appropriately toss the ball to their partner’s forehand side at about shoulder height. The partner with the paddle has to return 3 out of the 4 balls across the net while staying inside of the court. After 4 balls have been hit they will then switch roles, the person who was tossing the balls will now be hitting the balls and the person hitting the balls will now be tossing the balls. 1 Minute Testing skills for Forehand Groundstroke The teachers will pair up students, half of the students will be handed four balls and the other half will be handed a paddle. The half with the 4 balls will go to one side of the net and stand approximately 1 step back, the other pair will go to the opposite side of the net and stand approximately 5 steps back. The partner with the 4 balls will appropriately make a bounce toss to their partners forehand side allowing the ball to bounce up to hip height. The partner with the paddle has to return 3 out of the 4 balls across the net while staying inside of the court. After 4 balls have been hit they will then switch roles, the person who was tossing the balls will now be hitting the balls and the person hitting the balls will now be tossing the balls. 1 Minute Testing skills for Backhand Volley The teachers will pair up students, half of the students will be handed four balls and the other half will be handed a paddle. The half with the 4 balls will go to one side of the net and stand approximately 5 steps back, the other pair will go to the opposite side of the net and stand approximately 1 step back. The partner with the 4 balls will appropriately toss the ball to their partner’s backhand side at about shoulder height. The partner with the paddle has to return 3 out of the 4 balls across the net while staying inside of the court. After 4 balls have been hit they will then switch roles, the person who was tossing the balls will now be hitting the balls and the person hitting the balls will now be tossing the balls. 1 Minute Testing skills for Backhand Groundstroke The teachers will pair up students, half of the students will be handed four balls and the other half will be handed a paddle. The half with the 4 balls will go to one side of the net and stand approximately 1 step back, the other pair will go to the opposite side of the net and stand approximately 5 steps back. The partner with the 4 balls will appropriately make a bounce toss to their partner’s backhand side allowing the ball to bounce up to hip height. The partner with the paddle has to return 3 out of the 4 balls across the net while staying inside of the court. After 4 balls have been hit they will then switch roles. The person who was tossing the balls will now be hitting the balls and the person hitting the balls will now be tossing the balls. 1 Minute Review Cues and Steps for Drop-Hit serve Students will circle up around the net for a brief discussion of the cues and steps for the drop-hit serve. Each student will be asked to perform the steps so the teachers can make sure that students know what they are doing because later on in the lesson the students will be tested on their abilities to perform this task. 1 Minute Testing skills for Drop-Hit serve The teachers will pair up students, half of the students will be handed 4 balls and a paddle and the other half will be handed just a paddle. The half with just the paddle will go to one side of the net and stand at the baseline, the other half with the paddle and the 4 balls will go to the other side of the net and stand on their baseline. The partner with the 4 balls will use the drop-hit serve method, in order to receive a 100 on this test the student will need to get 3 out of the 4 balls over the net at a diagonal angle to their partner. The partner with just the paddle will catch the 4 balls that were served over and hang onto them until their turn. After 4 balls have been served the students will then switch roles, if the student served the ball they will now catch the ball and if the student caught the ball they will now be serving the ball. 1 Minute Cues for how to begin a point in a Tennis/Racquet sport match Students will circle up around the net for a brief discussion on how to correctly put the ball in play during a match/game. They will need this in order to play in the Games later on during the class period. Teachers will teach the students how to say the score properly. Such as saying your score first whether it is the lower score or higher score (Ex: 1 serving 2). Or saying 2 all if each team has 2 points. 5 Minutes Singles Game – Forehand/Backhand Groundstroke/Volley The teachers will pair up the students with their single game opponent. Each student will go to the baseline on the opposite side of the net from each other. The boundaries will be the baseline, sideline, and center court line. The games will be scored using the rally point system; if you win the point you also get to serve the next ball will score the games. The games will be played to 7 points; the winner of the game will then play the winner of the other singles game that was being played and the student who lost the game will play the student who lost the other game. This will continue for 5 minutes. 10 Minutes Doubles Game – Forehand/Backhand Groundstroke/Volley 30 Minutes Doubles Round Robin The teachers will pair up the students to form 2 doubles teams. Each team will go to opposite baselines; the boundaries will be the baseline and the sidelines. The serve will be in drop-hit form and must land on the diagonal side of the court. The games will be played to 7 points; after the game is finished 1 player from each team will switch to opposite sides and play with a partner they have not yet had. Every odd game will be played with the players alternating turns hitting the ball. Every even game will be played with the player hitting the ball whenever it comes to them. This will continue for 8 minutes. For round robin play there will be two courts for girls and two courts for boys. The students will pick a partner of the same gender and then they will find another pair of the same gender to play. All games will begin with a drop serve and the scoring will be rally to seven points. The first team to serve will serve two times (same server both times), then the other team will serve twice (same server). Then the player on the first team who did not serve the first time will serve twice, and same for the other team. Once a team has scored seven points, all players must report to the teacher and have their scores recorded. Players will then select a different partner to play with as well as a different team to play against. This play will go on until every student plays one doubles game with each person in their group.
