Introduction New student representative: Brandon Holmes was introduced; C.Dykes introduced his graduate student IV. Approval of August 23rd minutes Minutes from the 8/23/12 meeting were reviewed. S. Pryor motioned to accept. C. Dykes seconded the motion. Minutes approved. A. Review of the SON bylaws A. M. Ellis announced she requested Faculty Affairs (FA) to review the representation level of the Curriculum faculty appointees. A. M. Ellis forwarded request to FA. X B. Outstanding Course Reports B. M. Ellis reported the outstanding Course Reports for the 11/12 academic year. 1. 314 (Bradford/Black) 2. 315 (Bradford/Black) 3. 375 (Maynor) 4. 382 (Anderson) 5. 485 (S. Ellis) 6. 482 (R. Hathaway) Discussion ensued regarding outstanding course reports. Hart/Ellis have contacted designated course coordinators regarding outstanding reports. All reports are scheduled to be submitted before the end of the fall 12 semester. Discussion continued regarding the need to orient new course coordinators and measures to improve response rates. Hart reiterated the need to submit a blank course report for those courses whose response rate B Curriculum “mentors” are to contact their “linked” course coordinator to facilitate completion of the Course Report and to offer assistance with any fall evaluations scheduled. Ask Course Coordinators for feedback to streamline course reports and forward information to Ellis. X X V. Old Business 3 fell below the <20% benchmark and were evaluated in the spring semester. Ellis identified the ATI report is a possible reason for the delayed submission. She explored possibilities with ATI to tailor a report for Southeastern, but this is not an option presently. C. “Observational” experiences in SON curriculum-Wound Care/OR C. Discussion ensued regarding the value Wound Care and OR has in the generalist nurse’s education. These experiences were stopped abruptly for the third semester students (NLAB 382) in the fall 12 semester, after years of implementation. D. Hart reported meeting with Dr. Creel regarding the Wound Care experience. Faculty supervision is the underlying factor regarding student placement in various clinical sites rather than “observation”. The supervising clinical faculty needs to be in the facility and have no more than 10 students under their supervision. D. Hart reported a meeting with Drs. Anderson/Tillman and R. Landreneau, OLOL OR Educator to discuss the viability of OR in the curriculum. OLOL OR can accommodate six students at a time. It was determined per Dr. Creel to allow a student follow an assigned patient to the OR if the facility permitted. J. Hebert provided insight to the benefit of using freestanding surgery centers as clinical sites creating a “hands on” experience rather than a perceived observational one. Skill gleaned from previous experiences included: assessment, communication, knowledge of sterile technique, IV insertions, medication administration, and patient education. Written assignment included a narrative regarding advocacy and various concepts in OR and PACU. Reflecting and reasoning while being C. Ad hoc formed to explore various options regarding placement and value of OR in the curriculum. D. Hart to contact R. Kerner (J. Jones/J. Hebert-ad hoc members) X 4 present in the OR is a large component. Ethics are a large part of the perioperative experience. C. Dykes reiterated some students in NLAB 373 are able to follow a patient but it is facility and faculty dependent. J. Jones identified in NLAB 489 -ICU experiences are often observation at North Oaks Medical Center. M. Ellis/J. Hebert identified primary nursing care responsibilities for students in ICU’s in other facilities. M. Ellis requested some type of coordination between faculty/courses/facilities so students would experience similar experiences. J. Jones mentioned students have identified lack of varied nursing experiences other than med/surg. M. Ellis summarized the desire to keep these experiences in our curriculum and to possibly standardized processes experiences pertaining to NLAB 382 and NLAB 373. D. Pharmacology ATI placement D. M. Ellis spoke with Dr. Creel who asked Curriculum to discuss the ATI Pharmacology and the placement with the NLAB 489 course. Historically, this test was administered to the Foundation students after completing the pharmacology courses. Their results were poor. Since the psych medications are not included in these courses, the placement of this test was moved to the fifth semester. M. Ellis met with B. Meeker, NLAB 489 Course Coordinator, to discuss the Pharmacology ATI test. Dr. Meeker reported the student’s test results remained poor, the test is not linked to a clinical grade, and test books are not available timely limiting student prep time. M. Ellis will follow with an email to committee members. X 5 Discussion ensued regarding the value the test has for the students and SON program evaluation. C. Dykes questioned the need to administer the exam especially if some of the content was incorporated tested in other ATI tests. M. Ellis reported Dr. Creel’s recommendation to move the test to the 3rd semester. The 3rd semester currently has two ATI tests linked to clinical grades. C. Dykes reported current NCLEX plans are using 12-18% pharmacology related questions. Concerns linking Pharm ATI to a theory course were discussed. Questions posed: Are our graduates performing poorly on the NCLEX pertaining to pharmacology? What % of psych medications is included in the pharm ATI? Does the RN comprehensive test reflect poor results pertaining to pharmacology? VI. Next Meeting VII. Adjournment Spring 2013 TBA 4 pm Respectably Submitted, Denise Hart, MSN, RN, CWOCN
